Mr. Shazer <strong>of</strong> Olympia bought a pair <strong>of</strong> oxen and paid Fa<strong>the</strong>r in<br />

fifty dollar slugs (eight corners). Mr. Logan Hays traded Elaborate<br />

slug·s and a lot in Olympia as part payment for Jack and Dandy. They<br />

were a prize winnillg pair <strong>of</strong> cattle. They were twins, <strong>of</strong> a strawberry<br />

roan color and were almost identically alike, Dandy being a little<br />

darker color than Jack. They would walk up briskly toge<strong>the</strong>r and we<br />

always kept <strong>the</strong>m on <strong>the</strong> lead. ",Ve boys did not like to see Jack and<br />

Dandy go. Frank Stocking afterward owned <strong>the</strong> lot. I think it is not<br />

far from <strong>the</strong> new post <strong>of</strong>fice in Olympia.<br />

Capt. Cros<strong>by</strong> came to see Fa<strong>the</strong>r one day and heard Tom and me<br />

pounding out wheat with flails in <strong>the</strong> old barn. After getting all <strong>the</strong><br />

information he could on that process <strong>of</strong> threshing, he called on Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

at <strong>the</strong> house and sold him two lots in Tumwater at fifty dollars per<br />

lot. \\Te could have bought lots near Pioneer Square in Seattle for<br />

<strong>the</strong> same money. (Our lots are <strong>the</strong>re yet and still worth fifty dollars.)<br />

Bro<strong>the</strong>rs Thomas and William built a little house on <strong>the</strong> lots<br />

and went to school at Olympia to Mr. Cornelius' Select School.<br />

Mr. Goodell and family had settled at what was known as Goodell<br />

Point. He got six hundred and forty acres <strong>of</strong> land; nIl'. Axtell a little<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r up <strong>the</strong> road; Bill Cooper where <strong>the</strong> road first reaches <strong>the</strong><br />

prairie coming from <strong>the</strong> south; Mr. Durgan on <strong>the</strong> :Mound. Mr. Augustus<br />

Gangel<strong>of</strong>f got three hundred acres adjoining on <strong>the</strong> east and<br />

Mr. James Biles right opposite our place on Scatter Creek; Mr. Austin<br />

Sargent beyond Mr. Biles on Scatter Creek. Mr. Bartholemew Baker<br />

took his donation claim to <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong> Sargent; Mr. Henry Hale and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Can<strong>by</strong> Bro<strong>the</strong>rs where Rochester is located. Far<strong>the</strong>r up Scatter<br />

Creek, Mr. Dayid Blyes located next to Nelson Sargent. Across <strong>the</strong><br />

creek Mr. Asher Sargent, <strong>the</strong> elder. Fur<strong>the</strong>r up <strong>the</strong> creek, Rev Charles<br />

Byles located across <strong>the</strong> prairie as you go to Olympia on <strong>the</strong> middle<br />

road fur<strong>the</strong>r up along <strong>the</strong> famous creek. Mr. ",Villiam Mills, Mr.<br />

Abraham '1'illey, Ignatius Colvin, Aaron Webster, Reuben Crowder,<br />

Oliver Sheal, ",Villiam and Phillip Northcraft, Hiram l\Iize, Alex Yantis,<br />

was <strong>of</strong>f Scatter Creek on <strong>the</strong> valley <strong>of</strong> Skookumchuck, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with Ticknor fur<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> east, but on <strong>the</strong> same plain as Scatter<br />

Creek settlements. Hodgen and Davenport were on Scatter Creek at<br />

<strong>the</strong> east crossing as you go to Olympia. Capt. Henness was where<br />

<strong>the</strong> Eureka Quarry now stands. Samuel Coulter took his donation<br />

opposite Mr. Colvin's. '1'0 <strong>the</strong> north .Mr. Kirtly was between Tilley's<br />

.md Case's. To <strong>the</strong> south, as you journey from Grand Mound, were<br />
