Mllitarisation and its Affects on Durban Bands<br />

In an effort to combat the uprisings of the black working class,<br />

the government relied on a greater mobilisation of defence force<br />

troops (most of whom were young white men, forcibly conscripted<br />

for military service). It was not only the years of conscription<br />

that interrupted many young men's lives, but also the subsequent<br />

military camps that required those men who had already completed<br />

their national service to perform military duties for one to<br />

three months of each year. This compulsory military service<br />

prompted many young white South African men to leave South Africa<br />

as an avoidance measure. This dealt a hard blow to many a South<br />

African band, and the South African rock music scene was harshly<br />

affected by the exodus. Dave Gardner, a prominent<br />

Pietermaritzburg musician who· was emigrating to the United<br />

Kingdom was interviewed by The Natal Witness in 1984. When asked<br />

what the main reason behind the exodus of local musicians to<br />

Europe, this was his response:<br />

The main reason, inevitably, is the army. Many<br />

musicians feel it is unj ust to support the present<br />

government. I feel it is even more important that one<br />

can't try to be a musician and at the same time go off<br />

to camps once a year. If there is a four-piece band<br />
