element model of the process geometry, an evaluation for lateral tool position estimation can be made prior to fabrication, setup, and welding. Welds were performed at 1000 rpm and 4 in/min using 6061 aluminum in the two fixturing configurations depicted in Figure 30 and Figure 31. The configuration in Figure 30 produced the laterally dependent process force variations necessary for seam misalignment detection while the configuration in Figure 31 did not.
