the textiles myself, I might have had a seamstress who did them, yes.<br />

So this [sofa] has changed place around our homes from one place to<br />

another but it has always been with us. So one just removes this white<br />

cover and you don’t have to iron it, even, but just stretch it over this, so<br />

it is, like (pause) awfully practical (laughs). As an interior decorating<br />

In 2005, the sofa was still in the temporary apartment in which they had been<br />

living, but it was on its way home.<br />

Hannele is an exceptional person in the sample because she tended to<br />

change the interior decoration so much, based on what she happened to like at<br />

the time and also according to the seasons.<br />

HP: so now that you’re looking at these photographs [taken in 2004], it<br />

looks to you that there’s lots of stuff?<br />

H: (pause) there is a lot more stuff, yes. Somebody might no doubt think<br />

there is very little, but (pause) I’m trying to get to a point that there<br />

would be as little as possible. That what there would be, it would have<br />

a meaning, or that it would be part of a certain, like, a mood thing,<br />

like, now with winter approaching and moving to stronger colours<br />

and warmth and such, and then comes summer, then you lighten everything<br />

up again and there’s more light and (pause) and it all stands<br />

the daylight. Because this sort of winter atmosphere is such that one<br />

wants to cuddle up in blankets and of course colours are quite important<br />

Olavi<br />

The carefully designed renovation of apartments can be seen as both a hobby<br />

and a means of income for Olavi.<br />

HP: do you talk about interior decoration a lot outside of home then?<br />

O: yes I do. And then here, in a sense it’s also part of my work, to comment<br />

on those things and to do stuff in that area. And it is a pleasing<br />

thing to me. I have even felt that I understand something about them,<br />

not much, but something, so that, too, it helps that one wants to get<br />
