We believe that the education our majors gain<br />

as readers <strong>and</strong> writers is invaluable whether<br />

they work in education, the legal field, the<br />

arts, electronic communication, publishing,<br />

business, the non-pr<strong>of</strong>it sector, government,<br />

or other careers.<br />

Requirements for English Major:<br />

• Minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 hours beyond freshman<br />

English.<br />

Sophomore requirements —<br />

• EN185, three <strong>of</strong> the four courses in the<br />

Literary <strong>and</strong> Cultural History sequence<br />

(EN245, 246, 265 <strong>and</strong> 266), EN321 or 322.<br />

Junior/Senior requirements —<br />

• EN 390: Research Seminar; one 300/400-<br />

level course in language, rhetoric or literary<br />

criticism; two 300-level literature courses;<br />

one 300/400-level course in subject area not<br />

covered in the Literary <strong>and</strong> Cultural history<br />

Sequence; for seniors, one 400-level seminar<br />

<strong>and</strong> one EN 450-level senior essay with<br />

emphasis in writing<br />

Requirements for English Minor:<br />

• Minimum <strong>of</strong> 18 hours beyond freshman<br />

English; EN185; 3-6 hours <strong>of</strong> EN200-level<br />

literature courses <strong>and</strong> 9-12 hours <strong>of</strong> EN300-<br />

<strong>and</strong> 400-level literature courses.<br />

Concentration in writing —<br />

• Minimum <strong>of</strong> 21 hours beyond freshman<br />

English requirement; EN185, 218 or 219;<br />

nine additional hours in writing courses<br />

<strong>and</strong> six hours <strong>of</strong> EN literature courses,<br />

including at least one course at the<br />

300-level or above.<br />

With Creative Writing<br />

Through the Concentration in Creative<br />

Writing, English majors have the opportunity<br />

to study the art <strong>and</strong> craft <strong>of</strong> creative writing.<br />

Students are given the opportunity to take<br />

workshops in poetry, fiction <strong>and</strong> nonfiction.<br />

Recent independent study projects have included<br />

screenplays, memoirs <strong>and</strong> graphic novels.<br />

Each year, through the nationally recognized<br />

Vivian S. Delbrook Visiting Writers Series,<br />

students have the opportunity to meet <strong>and</strong><br />

work one-on-one with writers such as Jonathan<br />

Lethem, Jean Valentine, <strong>and</strong> Lorrie Moore.<br />

Students who enroll in the Creative Writing<br />

concentration will take:<br />

• Minimum <strong>of</strong> 48 hours beyond freshman<br />

English<br />

Sophomore Requirements —<br />

• EN185, 218, 219, three <strong>of</strong> the four courses<br />

in the Literary <strong>and</strong> Cultural History<br />

sequence (EN245, 246, 265 <strong>and</strong> 266);<br />

EN321 OR 322<br />

Junior/Senior Requirements —<br />

• EN390: Research Seminar; one 300/400-<br />

level course in language, rhetoric or literary<br />

criticism; two 300-level literature courses;<br />

one 300/400-level course in subject area<br />

history Sequence; two 300-level writing<br />

courses; for seniors, EN410, Senior Creative<br />

Writing Seminar <strong>and</strong> one creative writing<br />

With <strong>The</strong>ory, Culture <strong>and</strong> Criticism<br />

Students will take additional courses in<br />

cultural studies, comparative literature, literary<br />

criticism <strong>and</strong> critical theory in order to study<br />

literary texts in a global cultural context. LTCC<br />

courses will look at diverse cultural objects<br />

— novels, plays, films, visual arts <strong>and</strong> media<br />

— through the lens <strong>of</strong> the literary <strong>and</strong> cultural<br />

theories, with the goal <strong>of</strong> producing sophisticated<br />

readers <strong>of</strong> the contemporary world. This<br />

concentration is highly recommended for those<br />

planning to pursue advanced degrees in the<br />

Humanities.<br />

With Emphasis in Literary <strong>The</strong>ory,<br />

Culture <strong>and</strong> Criticism<br />

• Minimum <strong>of</strong> 48 hours beyond freshman<br />
