SP300, Spanish Grammar in Context: Study<br />

<strong>of</strong> grammatical structures to master language at<br />

intermediate/advanced level. Students review,<br />

reinforce <strong>and</strong> practice grammar within contextual<br />

framework so as to build vocabulary, read<br />

cultural texts <strong>and</strong> create written material to see<br />

the interaction <strong>of</strong> language. Prerequisite: Complete<br />

SP204 or equivalent course or placement<br />

on 300-level in Spanish. (U)(3). Annually.<br />

SP305, Spanish for Oral Communication:<br />

Practice in oral Spanish to increase fluency<br />

through activities <strong>and</strong> discussion. Intensive<br />

controlled conversation <strong>and</strong> the facilitation <strong>of</strong><br />

debates <strong>and</strong> group discussions in relation to<br />

audiovisual materials <strong>and</strong> cultural readings.<br />

Prerequisite: Complete SP204 or equivalent<br />

course or placement on 300-level in Spanish.<br />

SP310, Spanish for Written Communication:<br />

Practice in written Spanish to facilitate the<br />

expression <strong>of</strong> ideas with a review <strong>of</strong> grammatical<br />

structures. Analysis <strong>of</strong> various writing styles<br />

<strong>and</strong> emphasis on the process <strong>of</strong> writing through<br />

guided correction <strong>of</strong> drafts to enhance selfevaluation<br />

<strong>and</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> writing skills<br />

such as developing a good thesis, or adapting<br />

the content to the reader. Prerequisite: Complete<br />

SP204 or equivalent course or placement<br />

SP320S, Service Learning in Spanish: <strong>The</strong><br />

general goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to increase students’<br />

fluency in Spanish skills <strong>and</strong> to encourage<br />

them to frame their community experience<br />

in meaningful ways. Class components: a<br />

supervised volunteer tutoring work (24 hours/<br />

semester) <strong>and</strong> weekly class meetings to discuss<br />

topics pertaining Latino immigration. This is<br />

an intensive writing class. Students elaborate<br />

journal <strong>and</strong> comment papers. Prerequisite:<br />

Complete SP204 or equivalent course or placement<br />

SP325, Intro to Hispanic Linguistics:<br />

Overview <strong>of</strong> the History, Phonetics, Syntax,<br />

Acquisition <strong>and</strong> Language Variation in Spanish<br />

(theories, analysis <strong>and</strong> application, conducted<br />

in Spanish). Prerequisite: One 300-level skills<br />

themes within the literature <strong>and</strong> culture <strong>of</strong> one<br />

the Caribbean. Prerequisite: One 300-level<br />
