GWS400, Internship/Practicum in Gender<br />

Studies: Designed to give students the<br />

opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge<br />

to everyday experience through a volunteer<br />

position, internship or employment in a setting<br />

where they can explore gender issues. <strong>The</strong><br />

student will work in conjunction with a faculty<br />

member; the Gender Studies Director must<br />

pprove the project. Prerequisite: GS100, GS300<br />

or 301, junior or senior st<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> six hours <strong>of</strong> electives. (U)(3) Annually.<br />

GWS401, 02, 03, Independent Study:<br />

Offers the qualified student <strong>of</strong> gender studies<br />

the opportunity to pursue a topic <strong>of</strong> individual<br />

interest. Open only to seniors, by permission<br />

<strong>of</strong> the instructor. (U)(1, 2, 3) Annually.<br />

<strong>The</strong> disciplines <strong>of</strong> History, Anthropology <strong>and</strong><br />

Geography share the same home because they<br />

address the same fundamental questions about<br />

life from different perspectives, the interplay<br />

amongst which enlarges our students’ minds<br />

<strong>and</strong> lives. <strong>Butler</strong> is singular amongst American<br />

universities in knitting these three disciplines<br />

into a working organism. Prospective majors in<br />

both History <strong>and</strong> Anthropology take together<br />

a freshman course, introducing them to each<br />

other <strong>and</strong> to the disciplines in their departments,<br />

thus <strong>of</strong>fering all the advantages <strong>of</strong><br />

self-st<strong>and</strong>ing disciplines <strong>and</strong> inter-disciplinary<br />

work <strong>and</strong> becoming themselves a community.<br />
