Learning Outcomes<br />

Students will be able to do the following,<br />

in the target language:<br />

• Clearly communicate in conversation <strong>and</strong><br />

written form on a variety <strong>of</strong> topics in the<br />

target language.<br />

• Articulate a cogent interpretation <strong>of</strong> a<br />

cultural text by applying concepts <strong>and</strong><br />

terminology pertaining to artistic, cultural<br />

studies, linguistic or literary theories.<br />

• Demonstrate pluralist values, global<br />

awareness <strong>and</strong> diversity-mindedness.<br />

Requirements for the Major<br />

A major in French, German or Spanish<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> 33 hours in the language, at least 24<br />

<strong>of</strong> these hours being on the 300 <strong>and</strong> 400 levels.<br />

All language majors will need to take at least<br />

one 300-level skills course <strong>and</strong> two 400-level<br />

courses. Specific area requirements are listed<br />

below by language.<br />

French<br />

French majors must fulfill the following<br />

requirements:<br />

• FR 300, Oral <strong>and</strong> Written Communication<br />

*all majors must complete this course for the<br />

300-level skills requirement<br />

Requirements for the Minor<br />

A minor in Chinese, French, German or<br />

Spanish consists <strong>of</strong> 21 hours in the language,<br />

at least 12 <strong>of</strong> these hours being on the 300 <strong>and</strong><br />

400 levels.<br />

Study Abroad<br />

Through membership in the International<br />

Student Exchange Program, <strong>Butler</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers programs<br />

in Argentina, Austria, Canada (Quebec),<br />

Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, France,<br />

Germany, Mexico, Spain <strong>and</strong> other countries.<br />

Students may choose to participate in other<br />

programs through <strong>Butler</strong>-directed study abroad<br />

through the Center for Global Education.<br />

Students receive credit for study abroad.<br />
