language. Students who place at the 200- or<br />

300-level on this exam earn from three to<br />

nine hours <strong>of</strong> advanced placement credit after<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> six credits <strong>of</strong> coursework at the<br />

300-level (with grades <strong>of</strong> C or better) in that<br />

language. Students who have taken the <strong>College</strong><br />

Board Advanced Placement Test in high school<br />

<strong>and</strong> receive a four or five are placed at the<br />

300-level <strong>of</strong> the appropriate language. Those<br />

students will also receive an additional three<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> 300-level credit.<br />

Modern Language Center<br />

<strong>The</strong> Modern Language Center (MLC) is a<br />

multilingual facility to advocate <strong>and</strong> support<br />

second language <strong>and</strong> culture acquisition. <strong>The</strong><br />

MLC (Jordan Hall, Room 391) includes a<br />

comprehensive foreign feature <strong>and</strong> instructional<br />

film collection, an up to date audio library, a<br />

large group viewing area, film viewing stations<br />

for individuals, multiregional VHS <strong>and</strong> DVD<br />

players, Windows <strong>and</strong> Macintosh based computers<br />

with foreign language capabilities, video<br />

recording equipment, gaming systems (DSi XL,<br />

Wii, etc.) with games in French <strong>and</strong> Spanish,<br />

etc. <strong>The</strong> MLC staff is trained in academic technology<br />

<strong>and</strong> research methodology to support<br />

all facets <strong>of</strong> language learning <strong>and</strong> teaching at<br />

<strong>Butler</strong>.<br />

Courses in English<br />

Language majors can count one FL course<br />

towards a major. Courses taught in English do<br />

not satisfy the foreign language competency<br />

requirement in the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Liberal</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Sciences</strong>.<br />

FL320, Chinese Civilization: An overview <strong>of</strong><br />

Chinese civilization from the early dynasties<br />

through the present. This course is taught<br />

in English <strong>and</strong> does not count toward the<br />

language requirement. (U)(3). Occasionally.<br />

FL380, Methodology in the Teaching <strong>of</strong><br />

Foreign Languages: Acquaints students with<br />

current methods <strong>of</strong> teaching foreign languages.<br />

Provides opportunities for use <strong>of</strong> the latest<br />

technologies, practical work <strong>and</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong><br />

problems encountered when teaching foreign<br />

languages <strong>and</strong> cultures. Course is applicable<br />

for teacher certification. (U)(3). On a rotating<br />

basis.<br />

FL390, Seminar: Study in depth <strong>of</strong> a selected<br />

topic in European, French, German or Hispanic<br />

culture, such as historical or social conditions,<br />

individual writers, artists, political figures<br />

or literary genres. (U)(3). On a rotating basis.<br />

FL480, Topics: Chinese Studies: Study <strong>of</strong> a<br />

selected topic in the culture <strong>of</strong> China. <strong>The</strong>mes<br />

may deal with literary, social, political, economic<br />

<strong>and</strong>/or ethical concerns. Course may be<br />

repeated with each different topic. This course<br />

is taught in English <strong>and</strong> does not count toward<br />

the language requirement. (U)(3). On a rotating<br />

basis.<br />

FL490, Seminar: In depth study <strong>of</strong> a selected<br />

topic in European, French, German or Hispanic<br />

culture such as historical or social conditions,<br />

individual writers, artists, political figures or<br />

literary genres. (U/G)(3). On a rotating basis.<br />

Courses in Foreign Languages<br />

To help students gain fluency, the target<br />

language is used extensively from the first day.<br />

Courses on the 300- <strong>and</strong> 400-levels are conducted<br />

completely in the target language.<br />

Chinese courses<br />

CN101, Beginning Chinese I: Emphasis is on<br />

spoken Chinese. Develops speaking, listening<br />

<strong>and</strong> writing skills, <strong>and</strong> insights into Chinese<br />

culture. Regular practice in the language center.<br />

CN102, Beginning Chinese II: Emphasis<br />

is on spoken Chinese. Develops speaking,<br />

listening, reading <strong>and</strong> writing skills, <strong>and</strong><br />

insights into Chinese culture. Regular practice<br />

in the language center. (U)(4). Annually.<br />

CN203, Intermediate Chinese I: Practice in<br />

listening, speaking, reading <strong>and</strong> writing for<br />

communication skills. Reviews fundamentals.<br />

Uses the Language Center. Prerequisite: One<br />

year <strong>of</strong> college Chinese or placement by<br />

evaluation. (U)(4). Annually.<br />

CN204, Intermediate Chinese II: Continuing<br />

practice in listening, speaking, reading <strong>and</strong><br />

writing for communicative skills. Further<br />

reviews fundamentals. Uses the Language<br />

Center. Prerequisite: CN203, placement by<br />

evaluation or the equivalent. (U)(4). Annually.<br />
