FR101, Beginning French I. Emphasis on<br />

reading <strong>and</strong> writing skills, <strong>and</strong> insights into<br />

French <strong>and</strong> Francophone cultures. Prerequisite:<br />

No previous formal French instruction. (U)(4).<br />

FR102, Beginning French II: Continuation<br />

<strong>of</strong> FR101. Emphasis is on spoken French.<br />

Develops speaking, listening, reading <strong>and</strong><br />

writing skills, <strong>and</strong> insights into French <strong>and</strong><br />

Francophone cultures. Prerequisite: FR101 or<br />

FR203, Intermediate French I: Review <strong>of</strong><br />

basics <strong>and</strong> new grammatical structures <strong>and</strong><br />

vocabulary. Continued practice in listening,<br />

speaking, reading <strong>and</strong> writing to develop<br />

competence in French. Study <strong>of</strong> cultural<br />

texts. Prerequisite: FR102 or placement<br />

FR204, Intermediate French II: Continuation<br />

<strong>of</strong> FR203. Further review <strong>of</strong> basics <strong>and</strong> new<br />

practice in listening, speaking, reading<br />

<strong>and</strong> writing to develop competence in French.<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> cultural texts. Prerequisite: FR203 or<br />

FR300, Oral <strong>and</strong> Written Communication:<br />

Intensive work on oral <strong>and</strong> written skills<br />

2 years <strong>of</strong> college French or placement<br />

FR320, Topics in French <strong>and</strong> Francophone<br />

Cultures: Study <strong>of</strong> a selected theme, period<br />

or topic in French or Francophone culture<br />

through a variety <strong>of</strong> cultural materials,<br />

literature, film, <strong>and</strong> other media. Prerequisite:<br />

FR325, Introduction to French Linguistics:<br />

This course will focus on basic elements <strong>of</strong><br />

French linguistics, phonetics <strong>and</strong> phonology<br />

as well as elements <strong>of</strong> stylistics. It will focus on<br />

sentence structure <strong>and</strong> vocabulary usage for a<br />

better grasp <strong>of</strong> the French language. Prerequisite:<br />

FR 334, 342 or permission from the<br />

instructor. On a rotating basis.<br />

FR334, Introduction to Francophone<br />

Cultures: This course is an in-depth introduction<br />

to the cultures <strong>of</strong> the Francophone world.<br />

It will introduce students to the historical<br />

background, the linguistic characteristics, the<br />

literature, music <strong>and</strong> cinema <strong>of</strong> six areas with a<br />

strong Francophone presence: Western Europe,<br />

North America, <strong>The</strong> Caribbean, North Africa,<br />

Sub-Saharan Africa <strong>and</strong> Asia. It will also help<br />

students continue to improve the four language<br />

skills. Prerequisite: FR300. (U)(3). On a<br />

rotating basis.<br />

FR335, France: Middle Ages to 1700: A survey<br />

<strong>of</strong> the evolution <strong>of</strong> France from the Middle<br />

Ages to 1700 through the study <strong>of</strong> literature<br />

<strong>and</strong> other cultural material. Prerequisite: FR305<br />

or 310. (U)(3). On a rotating basis.<br />

FR340, France: 18th- <strong>and</strong> 19th- Centuries:<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the evolution <strong>of</strong> France in the 18th<br />

<strong>and</strong> 19th centuries through the study <strong>of</strong> literature<br />

<strong>and</strong> other cultural material. Prerequisite:
