and at the end of the year, the crisis showed its full potential.
ZSSK CARGO carries out transportations of iron ore not only in import
for Slovak customers, but also in transit for foreign customers.
In this context, many questions have arisen. These could have
had a significant impact on our company, yet nobody, not even
the metallurgical companies, were able to answer them – what
decrease could be foreseen? Would the iron ore be prefered from the
Commonwealth of Independent States or from the overseas?
At present, some of those questions can be answered. Decrease in
transportations carried out by ZSSK CARGO related to metallurgy for
the 1st quarter equals to 41 % interannually. In transportations of
iron ore for foreign customers, the company observed a reduction
in performances by 55 %. More details on share of metallurgical
transportations on ZSSK CARGO transportations, on share of
individual commodities, on transportation flows and on decrease of
steel production in the EU and in the world are specified in tables and
graphs below.
These statistical data reflect the production of raw steel, i.e.
steel designated for production of final consumption products in
a particular steel plant and steel dispatched in the form of slabs to the
location of further processing (rolling and so on). For example, steel
production in USS Košice includes steel produced in their own iron
works, while a part of it has been directly processed to final products
(sheets, rods, ingot bars) in Košice, part of it has been dispatched, in
the form of slabs, to USS Serbia. Serbia can only indicate the volume
of steel produced in Serbia, i.e. excluding volume of production made
up of slabs imported from Slovakia.
What are the forecasts of development in metallurgical industry
for the years to come? There is no definite answer. Economists and
representatives of steel plants remain very careful in their estimates.
The original assumptions from the beginning of 2009 indicated an
expected recovery in the last quarter of 2009, but today we can see
that only getting closer to the values of the previous period will be
the issue of the next few years. Still, we are pleased to hear that the
projects of new metallurgical plants are being either prepared or built,
such as plants in Strážske in Slovakia or in the neighbouring countries.
These are the new challenges for ZSSK CARGO.
