A Good Foundation Malise Prieto C L A S S O F 1 9 7 6 ALUMNA PROFILE By: Deborah Burst Malise Prieto credits her success to her strong scholastic training at SSA She won the St.Tammany Parish Clerk of Court title in November 1995 after practicing 12 years of law during her mid thirties. Like many of us, Malise Prieto draws on her early roots working in the courthouse since the age of 13, burying her nose in record books abstracting during her summer vacations from SSA. Upon graduation in 1976, she attended LSU, then law school and returned home to do what she loved. “I can remember as a kid opening these books and seeing the clerk’s signature on the documents and thinking that’s what I want to do one day,” Malise says. “I love it…it’s a challenge every single day.” A born leader, she has served three terms and was elected to a fourth term with no opposition. Chartering a new direction for the Clerk of Court office, Malise has built a solid foundation based on employee education and customer satisfaction. Employees are provided uniforms and name tags promoting employee pride, confidence, accountability and recognition from the public. The professional image continues throughout the departments with strict attention to details.Walls are draped with European artwork, unsigned canvases from art schools in Europe. A cohesive team, each floor, department and employee work as partners serving their fellow coworkers and customers. A legacy of seven generations of Prietos on the Northshore, Malise is committed to building a strong community. She attended the 1997 St. Tammany West Leadership class, was instrumental in building the St. Tammany Trace and forged the way for a new courthouse. Five officials including Malise braved the political naysayers and pushed for more taxes to build the Justice Center. From a hodgepodge of buildings scattered throughout the downtown Covington area, the Clerk of Court’s office joined the Assessor’s and Sheriff’s office moving into the new building in 2003. “It took us three weeks but we never closed to the public…everyone jokes and says we went from the outhouse to the penthouse,” laughs Malise. Another responsibility of the Clerk of Court office is managing elections and the poll commissioners. Recognizing the challenge of recruiting poll commissioners to support a voting population of 153,000, the state legislature opened the positions to high school seniors. A huge push was put into place by Malise and her staff visiting high schools across the parish. SSA offered their cafeteria for the six hour class, welcoming seniors and in some cases their parents. It provides initiative, good communication skills and a way to make some extra money. Many graduates are adding the position to their resumes and college applications. “They learn about the election process, the voting machine and hopefully voting will be a normal part of their adult life,” says Malise. “They add so much energy and the other commissioners love having them.” 10 D O V E W I N G S Clerk of Court, Prieto. Prieto as a SSA student. With 158 precincts, Becky Galatas ‘76, the election coordinator, reports there are 970 active commissioners. They had a very successful campaign certifying 40 SSA seniors last year. As they graduate and move on to college, some retire while others continue their commissioner duties. Becky recognizes one SSA student in particular. “Vicitoria Doskey worked every election since certification,” says Becky commenting she’s now a student at LSU. “They’re not intimidated by technology.” A mover and shaker, Malise stays active in the community and a leader in motivating others to volunteer. Every year the entire Clerk of Court office supports a different charity. Recently they selected the food bank and SSA assisted in the effort collecting food, moving boxes and working inside the food bank building. With roughly 63 graduates in SSA’s class of ’76, the group holds a collection of independent thinkers and hard-working professionals who meet for dinner about every 6 weeks. Many have moved back home from out of state and some travel from out of town for the dinners.They come together to support each other, in good times and bad. “We’ve gone through all kinds of personal challenges,” says Malise. “Our class is there for each other.” Malise says a good part of her success is due to her education at both Our Lady of the Lake and Saint Scholastica Academy. She attributes her foundation in writing as the key element in completing law school. “I was lucky enough to have Sister Jeanne d’Arc and Alyce O’Brien for honors English,” says Malise.“They helped me so much with my writing skills, I could put my thoughts down, it made law school a breeze.” But Malise admits there was more to SSA than English. A well rounded program that not only helped her get where she is today but forged a path in gaining personal goals. “I will cherish forever Olive Hendry,” says Malise who loves to travel abroad. “She taught me French which led me to my passion, I still use it as my second language and it prepared me for college.”
C L A S S N O T E S 1939 Doris Bourgeois DeAngelis is 86 years old and resides in an assisted living residence in Atco, NJ. Her daughter, Harriet, writes that Doris has dementia/Alzheimer’s and is able to sit and read “Wings”. Harriet said, “Doris appears to be brightened up by doing so.” 1961 Sister Benita Peters is currently a health services assistant for the Benedictine Sisters at the Sacred Heart Monastery in Cullman, Alabama. Sr. Benita said that she had a reunion during Easter 2007 with Ann Griffin Boland in Cullman, AL. Ann is a 1961 classmate and a former member of the Benedictine Sisters. They had not seen each other in 30 years. 1963 Maria Flores Munguia, originally from Nicaragua, moved to Florida in 1979 with two daughters and one son. She has a six year old grandchild. She writes, “I will always remember all my good days I had at SSA.” 1964 Kathryn Bordelon Jones retired after 30 years of teaching in the Georgia Cobb County School System. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, Kathryn and husband John moved to Diamondhead, Mississippi to be closer to their family. Linda Hanemann McPherson recently retired from the Georgia Cobb County School System after 40 years as a teacher and counselor. She is the only staff member at her school, who has been there since it opened. The school theater was named after her in honor of her service. She returned to the same school as a part-time counselor in the fall. She has two children and two grandchildren. 1975 Debbie Dugan Bowie with daughters Elizabeth ’02 and Laura ’05 joined husband Earl and sons for the Saints game in London. Elizabeth studied at Oxford. Kerry Sweeney Graham is living in Charlotte, NC where she is office manager for a local physician. She has two daughters, Stephanie (23) and Camille (21). 1976 Alice “Allie” Sewell is living in Baton Rouge where she is the Clinical Quality Coding Coordinator and Auditor for Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She also teaches PSR at St. Aloysius Church. Desiree Taylor Billeaud has made time from her busy work schedule to coach Our Lady of the Lake Sparklettes dance team. 1978 Liz Mentel Ballas is happily married to Richard. They have two sons Jeffrey and Matthew Montalbano and stepson Cole Ballas. She is Nana to three grandchildren – twin boys and a granddaughter. Liz says she is enjoying all that God has blessed her with and loving it. 1979 Benita Galatas Santini traveled to London for the Saints game. Benita and Elaine Simmons toured and attended a service at Westminister Abbey. 1981 Laura Brandt Alberts, husband Lloyd and son Joseph (4) moved to Covington. She is VP, Lending at Citizens Bank and Trust and is a member of the Board of Directors. 1982 Stephanie Jacob Triplett is starting a new venture in addition to her Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio. She is now the Mandeville consultant for the Carlisle Collection. Elizabeth Timothy is living in Pensacola, Florida. In 2004 she was appointed magistrate judge for the Northern District of Florida. Elizabeth was the 2009 Career Day keynote speaker. 1985 Tina Brandt Brantley, husband Mark (SPS ’84) and daughter Caroline (10) returned to Covington. Tina teaches fifth grade at Our Lady of the Lake School. Melissa Wilson Taylor recently got married, bought a home and published a children’s storybook called “I Love Dirt.” Available at amazon.com 1986 Elizabeth Joanen Stokes has partnered with the publisher of Louisiana Homes & Garden Magazine to create a new website, ourhouse.biz, which focuses on keeping commerce in our own community by offering an online resource for living locally. 1990 Nicole Delauzain Dezendorf, husband Chris and children Edward (4) and Maggie (1) reside in El Paso, Texas. Shelly Derbes Lynch, husband Jody (SPS ’90), daughters Maren (3) and baby Claire are living in North Carolina. Tara LaRocca White and husband Bryan live in Covington with their daughter, Mary Ella, 6 and son, Jack, 4. She is the Membership Director for Northshore Community Foundation. Tara recently volunteered for a medical mission trip in April, 2008 to Guatemala. The trip was sponsored by Helping Hands Medical Missions, an apostolate of the Regnum Christi movement. Melissa Smith Ellis, husband Patrick and son James (5) returned to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. She published a book, “Historic Photos of New Orleans.” Melissa gave a presentation at the St. Tammany Library, where she discussed New Orleans during the early 19th century. 1993 Kim Colle Reagan and husband Joseph with daughter Kaitlyn (3) moved back to Covington.
