The celebration of St. Scholastica’s Feast Day in February 2008 began with a Mass officiated by Abbot Justin Brown, O.S.B.
The classes of 1958 (50 years) and 1983 (25 years) were honored at this special event. After Mass, 137 eighth graders were
formally inducted into the SSA family.
Principal Mary Kathryn Villere impressed upon the eighth graders the significance of their induction into the Academy. Villere
stated, “Being a member of this Academy affords you certain opportunities. It allows you to learn a mode of living (the pillars
of Benedictine spirituality) that, if followed, will support you in making life choices throughout your lives.” Each of the eighth
graders received the SSA pin in honor of their induction to SSA
The senior “big sisters” pinned their eighth grade “little sisters” and then formed an Honor Guard holding pink carnations,
which were given to the eighth graders as they processed through the line.
Part of the Feast Day celebration was a luncheon organized by the SSA Parent Club and held in the cafeteria. The co-chairs
of the luncheon were Julie Authement, Rebecca Cole, Karen Saltalamacchia, and Cindy Smith. The decorations chair Paulette
Crawford transformed the cafeteria into a Night at the Academy Awards where everyone was a shining star. The banners and
tables were decorated in black and white with an official red carpet entrance. There were candid pictures of students on the
bulletin boards as “SSA Shining Stars”. The cafeteria staff prepared a delicious meal and the SSA moms served lunch to the
honored alumnae, students, teachers and staff.
St. Scholastica lived in the fifth century and with her brother St. Benedict founded two religious orders for men and women.
The school has a special saying about their patron, “St. Scholastica could do more because she loved more.”
