Father Mathew Clark, O.S.B. celebrated the Mother-Daughter Mass at
St. Peter Church. Before Mass, each senior read a personal speech
prepared as a tribute to her mother as part of the Year of the Dove,
Mother-Daughter Tea.
Mothers and daughters enjoyed delicious food prepared by Benedict’s
Restaurant. The senior dads helped serve the food and beverages.
The chairs of the event were Ginny Kamath, Shaheen Rahman, and
Dorothy Schouest. Committee chairs included: Cynthia Arnoult, Brigid
Dickson, Cindy Fekete, Cheryl Murphy, Alicia Nolan, Rosana Preau.
Latin and Humanities Teacher Wayne Cruthirds was
presented with the first annual Scholastica Teaching
Award in May 2008. The teaching award, established by
an anonymous parent donor, was to be given to a
teacher who demonstrates a dedication to the ministry
of teaching, exemplifies the Benedictine tradition, and
openly illustrates devotion to St. Scholastica Academy
and her students.
Each senior was invited to nominate a teacher from any
grade level who displayed the above traits and influenced
their lives spiritually, academically, and personally. The
nomination is done through an essay written by the
senior. Katie Schembre 2008 nominated Cruthirds for
the award.
Cruthirds (“Mr. C”) was hired in 1979. He has a
bachelor’s degree in classical philology (Greek and Latin
language and literature) from Loyola University-New
Orleans and a masters degree in philology from Harvard
University. Cruthirds was a volunteer in the Peace Corps
and received “My Special Teacher” award. He also
received a National Endowment for the Humanities
Fellowship to attend a program at Marymount University
in Arlington, VA. Cruthirds has been at the school for 29
years and has also taught English. Always ready to help
with any task, he has volunteered his time at the Falaya
Fling for years.
Cruthirds is married to Sunny, who worked at SSA for 11
years as the bookkeeper. His son Wayne graduated from
St. Paul’s and daughter Sarah, graduated from SSA in
2003. Our students love “Mr. C”.
