SPJIMR named Champion in the Capsim<br />
Challenge<br />
A five member team from SPJIMR was declared the<br />
Champion in the Fall 2012 Capstone® Business<br />
Simulation Challenge held in November last year. The<br />
team comprised Sonia Apsingekar, Vikalp Babelay,<br />
Gaurav Sapra <strong>and</strong> Viraj Kulkarni. With a balanced<br />
scorecard <strong>of</strong> 777 out <strong>of</strong> 1,000, they topped the list <strong>of</strong><br />
winners <strong>and</strong> saw SPJIMR named as the “Champion –<br />
Fall 2012” in the “Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame” <strong>of</strong> the Capsim<br />
Challenge.<br />
The Capsim Challenge takes students who have<br />
participated in the Capstone <strong>and</strong> Foundation business<br />
simulation in their B-school <strong>and</strong> pits them against each<br />
other in a biannual competition to crown the world's<br />
best at running a multi-million dollar simulated<br />
company. Twice each year, Capsim alumni have the<br />
opportunity to test their business acumen against<br />
competitors from all over the globe.<br />
Some 1,800 students from more than 280 universities<br />
around the globe participated in the Capsim Challenge<br />
in November, with 12 teams (six each for Capstone <strong>and</strong><br />
Foundation business simulation) qualifying for the 48-<br />
hour, high pressure business play<strong>of</strong>fs. Eight teams from<br />
SPJIMR participated in the challenge, with five <strong>of</strong> them<br />
finishing in the top 10 percentile.<br />
Apart from SPJIMR, teams from University <strong>of</strong><br />
Queensl<strong>and</strong>, University <strong>of</strong> Maryl<strong>and</strong>, Montana State<br />
University-Billings, Curtin University <strong>and</strong> Goa <strong>Institute</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Management</strong> made it to the finals.<br />
Capstone simulation forms a part <strong>of</strong> the course<br />
'Decision Analysis through Simulation' which is<br />
conducted by Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Vasant Sivaraman <strong>and</strong> Bindu<br />
Kulkarni in the first semester <strong>of</strong> the PGDM programme.<br />
DOCC does it again at RMAI<br />

The Rural Marketing Association <strong>of</strong> India (RMAI) <strong>and</strong><br />
Ayurvet Ltd. organised the 6th Annual Ayurvet RMAI<br />
Awards for the Best Summer Project in Rural Marketing<br />
by management students. In all, 84 entries were<br />
received from 30 management schools across the<br />
country including IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM<br />
Kozhikode, IIM Lucknow, IIM Rohtak, IIM Shillong,<br />
SPJIMR, Mica <strong>and</strong> Teri.<br />
Ten <strong>of</strong> the 84 entries were invited to present at an<br />
awards ceremony on 27th September at the India<br />
International Centre, New Delhi. Three out <strong>of</strong> the<br />
chosen ten were from the second year PGDM students<br />
<strong>of</strong> SPJIMR, who presented their DOCC projects. Pr<strong>of</strong>.<br />
Ch<strong>and</strong>er Sabharwal provided feedback on each <strong>of</strong> the<br />
10 projects presented on that day.<br />
Ranjana Dobal, student <strong>of</strong> SPJIMR, presented on Value<br />
Chain Intervention- a self sustainable business model<br />
<strong>and</strong> bagged the first prize – a trophy, a certificate <strong>of</strong><br />
merit <strong>and</strong> a cash award <strong>of</strong> Rs. 50,000.<br />
The second <strong>and</strong> third prizes were bagged by the<br />
students from IIM Rohtak for their projects on Rural<br />
Electrification <strong>and</strong> Rural Marketing & Distribution.<br />
RMAI is an industry body <strong>of</strong> strategic thinkers <strong>and</strong><br />
implementation agencies in the domain <strong>of</strong> rural<br />
marketing. Ayurvet is one <strong>of</strong> the leading companies in<br />
the business <strong>of</strong> animal health care, nutrition & research<br />
<strong>and</strong> rural entrepreneurship development.<br />
The projects were evaluated by a jury comprising<br />
Sanjeev Shukla, General Manager, Hero Motocorp; R<br />
V Rajan, Chairman, Anugrah Madison Advertising Pvt.<br />
Ltd. <strong>and</strong> founder president <strong>of</strong> the RMAl <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>.<br />
Ch<strong>and</strong>er Sabharwal, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at IMT <strong>and</strong> Managing<br />
Director, Crop Health Products Ltd.<br />
