Spirits Whiskey Canadian CROWN ROYAL Canadian Rye Whiskey Bottle (70cl) £24.95 40.0%alc JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 93 POINTS - 'Seriously big rye offers a hard and fruity edge to the soft corn and oak; rock-hard and crisp mouth arrival thanks to the early rye, softens for the corn and then the rye sends some fruity shockwaves around the palate; bitter and booming: big controlled oak finale on gentle oil; this has definitely changed in the last seven or eight yers, as all blends must. It has a slightly larger rye dependency than of old but the mouthwatering effect is sublime. An international great.' Indian AMRUT Indian Whiskey Bottle (70cl) 40.0%alc £23.95 JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 82 POINTS - 'The press picked this up and made a point of saying that experts can't tell between this and top Scottish malt Interesting. Certainly this can be easily mistaken for an old Scotch single malt, though not a top one. That said, this is enjoyable stuff especially when considering the Indian distiller's perennial problem of overcoming the fierce temperatures that make maturation such a nightmare. With Amrut there is profound oak on both the nose and finish, giving the impression of a Speysider at about 35 or 36 years.' Irish BUSHMILLS 'Black Bush' Irish Whiskey Bottle (70cl) 40%alc £22.95 JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 91 POINTS - 'amazingly spicy - a bit like the old 1608! - with clean but lively sherry and freshish malt.This is one crackerjack nose; stunning: the sweetness is exemplary as its sits snugly between the enormity of the fruit and the clarity of the malt. Somewhere in there is a raisiny sheen; dropped points for a toffee - caramel finale, which undermines some of the compllexity. Even so, the sherry remains lip - smacking and the spices behave themselves; the quality of the sherry used boggles the mind. Remains a true classic.' Few whiskies can maintain this degree of sophistication. Love it!' Big and well structured, strengthened by the massive depth of malt; big oily arrival on the palate ensures a biscuity maltiness and a slightly molassed sweetness clings to the roof of the mouth. Lush, chewy and deep with a subtle bitter-sweet balance. Delicate peppers make for a teasing but controlled middle; the lingering spice tends to play peek-a-boo with the oily, almost unbelievably intense maltiness. At the death dries fabulously to show surprising age.'
