France - Burgundy
Gevrey-Chambertin
BERNARD DUGAT-PY Gevrey-Chambertin 'Coeur du Roy' £99.95
2005 Bottles
PARKER 91-92 ‘From largely 50-year-old (but some ancient) vines in parcels north of town,
below Mazis, and along the route nationale, the 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roi offers
striking bitter black fruit concentration and marrow-like meatiness. Low-toned cassis,
blackberry, black chocolate, marrow and wet stone inform a finish of striking purity and
persistence, albeit in a rather somber key and wearing its extract, abundant if fine tannins,
and new wood in rather obvious fashion. The rather monolithic impression on this occasion
might ultimately prove deceptive. Certainly this wine’s sheer raw intensity suggests a decade
or more of cellaring is warranted.’
BERNARD DUGAT-PY Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles-Vignes 2005 £79.95
Bottle
PARKER 91 ‘Dugat’s micro-climatically diverse parcels of village Gevrey with vines 30-50 years
of age inform his 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, which had just been bottled when I
visited (whereas the other wines would be bottled in a month or more). Dugat says his
sulfuring was as light as possible, and this wine is certainly not suffering in any obvious way. It
boasts a wonderfully silky suppleness of texture, juicy and engaging black raspberry and
pomegranate fruit character, and a finish featuring notes of game, forest floor, fruit skin
tartness, and the bitter side of vanilla bean, but with more brightness, lift and exuberance
than the firm and darkly-shaded wines typical of this vintage. Not that this wine lacks for grip
or visceral intensity. Sock some away for 8-10 years.’
CONFURON COTETIDOT Gevrey Chambertin 'Petite Chapelle' £59.95
1999 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER - "The 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle has a ruby color and a
blackberry-scented nose. This medium-bodied, lush, and intense wine is crammed with
plummy dark fruit flavors. Its velvety-textured personality leads to a firm, tannin-filled (yet
ripe) finish. Drink it over the next 6 years."
This old vine (65 years old on average) 11 hectare estate had moderate 35 hectoliter per
hectare yields in 1999. The reason, according to Yves Confuron, is the advanced age of the
vines. The Confurons are traditionalists in the sense they do their own vine selections,
growing them in a greenhouse for later in-house grafting. Their vineyards are plowed
regularly ("We were the first in the area to do so," said Yves Confuron), they continue to do
whole-cluster fermentations, and have never fined or filtered their wines. The estate's wines
are aged in 25-30% new oak, 25-30% one-year-old barrels, and the remaining 40-50% in 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th year vessels.
DENIS MORTET Gevrey Chambertin En Motrot 1993 Bottle
Saddle leather, earth and a deep core of fruit. Great length.
£89.95
DOMAINE FOURRIER Gevrey-Chambertin 'Clos St. Jacques' £164.95
2001 Bottle
The Burgundy Report "Medium ruby-red colour straight to the rim. The nose starts deep and
rather oakier than I normally associate with Fourrier, above the oak the vista slowly opens
with higher tones and an impression of sweet vanilla. Slowly a core of red fruit starts to
develop. You really need 24 hours to see the oaky veil lifted a little and some weighty depth
with floral hints and deeper savoury notes - this should be the final transformation of the oak.
With time the intensity and depth are more apparent than the vanilla."
JEAN-MARIE FOURRIER Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru 'Combe £56.95
aux Moines' 2008 Bottle
THE WINE ADVOCATE 89-91 points
Still harboring a bit of malic acid – not to mention a lot of CO2 – Fourrier 2008
Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines had to be tasted at above-cellar temperature since
the tank in which it resides had been gently warmed. An attractively yeasty, subtly toasty
note – taken together with the contrast of creamy texture and berry-brightness – conveys
simultaneous impressions of red currant- and cherry-filled pastry and boeuf en croute.
Palpably dense yet buoyant and vibrant, this needs to shed some superficial tartness but
looks on course to provide enormous satisfaction over the coming 10-12 years or more.
JEAN-MARIE FOURRIER Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru 'Combe £79.50
aux Moines' 2009 Bottle
THE WINE ADVOCATE 93+ points
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Combe Aux Moines is a dazzling wine loaded with superb
richness and depth in its dark red fruit. This shows marvelous power and a seamless quality to
the fruit that is head spinning in its beauty. The finish turns positively explosive. This is
gorgeous juice! Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.
JEAN-MARIE FOURRIER Gevrey-Chambertin 'Cherbaudes' £49.95
2008 Bottle
THE WINE ADVOCATE 90 points
Strong salt and cherry pit; sage and wormwood inflections; fresh cherry, red currant, and
blackberry along with smoked meat stock mark the nose of Fourrier’s 2008
Gevrey-Chambertin Cherbaudes. Bright and gripping as well as texturally dense, this is
seamless in its finishing meld of berry, animal, and mineral elements and appears to exude the
stamina and self-confidence needed for ten or a dozen years’ high performance.
JEAN-MARIE FOURRIER Gevrey-Chambertin 'Cherbaudes' £64.95
2009 Bottle
THE WINE ADVOCATE 92 points
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cherbaudes is a big, intense wine that stains the palate with
generous fruit. The Cherbaudes exudes depth, richness and power. It isn-t Fourrier-s most
elegant wine but it is among the most expressive today. The virile side of Gevrey is on full
display here. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
JEAN-MARIE FOURRIER Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles-Vignes £36.95
2008 Bottle
THE WINE ADVOCATE 90 points
The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin is an utterly impeccable, refined wine graced with exquisite
layers of intensely perfumed dark red fruit. This sensual, gorgeous Gevrey captures the
essence of the vintage in its classy, pedigreed personality. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
JEAN-MARIE FOURRIER Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles-Vignes £49.95
2009 Bottle
THE WINE ADVOCATE 92 points
The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin floats on the palate in its finessed, well-articulated fruit. Subtle
and ethereal through to the finish, the wine captures the essence and nobility of Gevrey. With
time in the glass the fruit turns darker and the wine puts on weight, showing tons of pedigree
and dazzling overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.
LOUIS JADOT Gevrey Chambertin 'Lavaux St Jacques' 1996 £59.95
Bottle
www.cellartracker.com "Wonderful nose with incredible complexity, so much so that it is
almost impossible to put down in words. Lush, rich dark fruit, grilled duck fat, chicken stock,
roasted meat, sous bois, violets. Just incredible. Palate was not quite there, but still
outstanding, with savoury bass notes and powerful red berry tones with little sprinkles of
violets and bramble, all supported by a firm structure with tight tannins and great acidity.
Lovely finish with more bramble, a little rubber and a touch of orange peel. This came across
as very, very young still. Already a great wine when we got to it, I can only imagine how good
it will be with a few more years in the bottle." (2009)
PATRICE & MICHEL RION Gevrey-Chambertin 'Clos Prieur' £29.95
2008 Bottle
Black fruits nose with blackberry in particular and a suggestion of oak. Pure, deep and fine on
the palate with black fruits and undergrowth. Lovely balance of acidity emerging from the
depths all the components so well integrated. A long silky and generous finish. Drink 2010 to
2016
Givry
FRANCOIS LUMPP Givry Rouge 1er Cru 'Petite Marole' 2006 £20.95
(08) Bottle
Domaine François Lumpp is generally accepted as being the best producer in Givry. François
and Isabelle Lumpp have 6.5 hectares under vine and, in the last fifteen years, have totally
replanted with the finest clones, planted closely together. François is a fanatical viticulturist
and insists on very low yields. All the grapes are hand picked and there is a further, severe
selection prior to vinification. The 1er Cru Petit Marole is sublime with a deep, black cherry
fruit, finely balanced tannins and a well supported touch of oak. This is as purer Burgundy as
you will get - beautifully balanced with great poise and elegance.
Marsannay
RENE BOUVIER Marsannay Rouge 'En Ouzeloy' 2006/07/08* £20.95
Bottle
Medium ruby colour, lovely rich, ripe cherries on the nose, which also has secondary notes of
earth and tobacco. Smooth, fruity and quite juicy on the palate. The acidity and tannins are in
great balance and there's a terrific lingering finish... this "mid-tier Burgundy" is ready right
now.
Mercurey
FRANCOIS RAQUILLET Mercurey 'Vieilles- Vignes' 2009 Bottle
£17.95
There have been vignerons in the Raquillet family since the 1600s. Francois joined his father,
Jean, in 1984 and took over entirely by the end of the 1990s. He has transformed the
winemaking, introducing better quality oak barrels and substantially reducing yields. He
currently works 11ha, all within the Mercurey appellation. Sourced from vines over 40 years
old and benefiting from low yields, this Pinot Noir offers excellent concentration of fruit.
Aromas typical of Pinot Noir with raspberry, strawberry and hints of violets.
Tim Atkin - "One of a number of really enjoyable Chalonnaise reds I've tasted from 2009, this is
aromatic and elegant with sappy tannin, red cherry and raspberry fruit and a supple, easy
drinking finish."
