Red Wine France - Rhone (S) Ch'neuf-du-Pape CHATEAU BEAUCASTEL Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1998 Bottle £77.95 WWW.WINEANORAK.COM - "Slightly closed nose showing some sweet herby fruit. The palate is open and herby with lovely spicy, chunky fruit and firm tannins. Not showing brilliantly at the moment, so if you have any I’d keep them for a good few years yet before opening. Very good/excellent 92/100 points." CHATEAU DE VAUDIEU Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2005/07** Bottle £25.95 The Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge, a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre has a bright cherry and garnet colour. It is a powerful, aromatic wine with perfumes of ripe strawberries and brambles, and an attractive tarry note lent by the Mourvèdre. On the palate it is full-bodied, with a touch of spicy oak from the Syrah and ripe, rounded Grenache tannins. It has pleasing length and spicy vanilla on the finish. 2009 - ROBERT PARKER 89-91 'The opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits lots of opulent fruit and an upfront, seductive, lush style. It is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Sryah aged in concrete tanks (60%) and small older oak barrels (40%). Full-bodied, deep and supple-textured, it should drink well for 7-8 years. ' DOMAINE CHARBONNIERE Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Domaine' 2009 Bottle £21.95 Real quality in Chateauneuf-du-Pape is difficult to find at this level but Charbonniere continues to produce the goods. Good concentration, weight and texture ensures this will be attractive both in youth and after a good number of years in the cellar. An elegant, harmonious Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It is seductive, charming and very complete, with admirable concentration and freshness. This has deep colour, fragrance of red and black fruits, good balance with mellow and elegant tannins. The natural acidity of the grapes gives the wine a certain freshness that follows through to the finish. Delicious! DOMAINE CHARBONNIERE Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Les £27.95 Hautes Brusquieres' 2005 (07)Bottle ROBERT PARKER 90 points 'Revealing garrigue and roasted herb characteristics, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hautes Brusquieres Cuvee Speciale exhibits classic aromas of seaweed, kirsch liqueur, resin, and licorice. Dark ruby-colored, full-bodied, rich, and broad, with an impressive finish, this cuvee nearly defines the word “Provencal.” Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15. This is one of the most well-run estates in Chateauneuf du Pape thanks to the meticulous and passionate efforts of proprietor Michel Maret...' DOMAINE CHARBONNIERE Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Mourre £29.95 des Perdrix' 2005/09* Bottle A super wine with great red fruit characteristics and aromatic nose. Starting to drink well now but will cellar well. ROBERT PARKER 92 points 'The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Mourre des Perdrix’s dark ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by notes of black raspberries, black currants, cherries, pepper, and incense, medium to full body, and a long, concentrated, layered finish...' Stephen Tanzer - 91-94 Points - 'Deep red. Seductively aromatic nose offers vibrant srtawberry and raspberry scents along with fresh flowers and minerals. Shows pinot-like clarity to its sweet red fruit flavours and finishes long and sappy. This medium bodied wine is already very attractive.' DOMAINE CHARBONNIERE Chateauneuf-du-Pape £29.95 'Vieilles-Vignes' 2005/09 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 92 points 'The most tannic, backward wine of the group is the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes. Like its 2006 counterpart, it is tightly knit, dense, and interesting, but not able to be fully examined at present. Full-bodied, rich, powerful, masculine, and virile, it needs 3-5 years of bottle age, and should last for two decades...' DOMAINE DE CRISTIA Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee £44.95 Renaissance' 2007 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 93-96 points The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Renaissance (60% 100-year-old-plus Grenache vines, 30% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah, aged in a combination of one-fourth new small barrels and three-fourths small barrels of two and three years of age) is sensational. It is inky bluish purple in a full-bodied style, displaying a classic blueberry, blackberry, and kirsch nose with an almost melted asphalt/charcoal-like character intermixed with lavender, spring flowers, as well as black olives and spice. The wine is super-concentrated and has a fabulously layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel as well as a stunning finish. This should be one of the more remarkable wines from the vintage and capable of lasting two decades or more. DOMAINE DE CRISTIA Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2009 Bottle £23.95 ROBERT PARKER 90-92 points 'The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is an up-front, forward wine exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of black cherries, cassis, incense, and smoky licorice. Round, rich, full, and opulent, it is a sensual wine to enjoy over the next 10-15 years. Proprietors Alain and Baptiste Grangeon have re-written this estate’s book on quality in a short period of time. Domaine de Cristia, which has rapidly become one of the appellation’s most dramatically improved estates, has expanded their operation to include some negociant selections bottled under the moniker, Cristia Collection.' Red Wine France - Rhone (S) Ch'neuf-du-Pape DOMAINE DE CRISTIA Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles-Vignes £44.95 2004 Bottle Dark colour. Earthy nose that shows blackberry and cherry along with tree bark, chocolate, and some herbs. Strong tannins on opening but softens with decanting. 100% Grenache from 70 to 80 year old vines, aged in 2-3 year old barriques. Drinks extremely well right now but will cellar superbly. Great finish and it is very highly recommended. DOMAINE DE CRISTIA Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles-Vignes £41.95 2006 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 92-95 points 'The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes’ intense ruby/purple color gives way to a full-bodied, supple-textured, expansive, savory wine offering notes of licorice, acacia flowers, creme de cassis, and sweet black cherries. Earthy, rich, forward, and supple, it is one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage. It should drink beautifully young, yet evolve nicely for 12-15 years.' DOMAINE DE CRISTIA Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles-Vignes £69.95 2007 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 95-98 points 'Even more profound than the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Renaissance, is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, made from 100% Grenache vines from sandy clay soils (the vines are between 70 and 85 years of age). This wine is aged completely in older small barrels. It is a candidate for the wine of the vintage. Dazzling in all respects, it boasts an inky/ruby/purple color, which is amazing given that this is all Grenache. It demonstrates the power of tiny yields and old vines. The extraordinary nose of crushed rocks, framboise, creme de cassis, and kirsch is dramatic. As the wine sits in the glass, notions of acacia flowers, licorice, and incense also make an appearance. On the palate, this is a wine of unreal concentration, a true elixir with a full-bodied style, yet incredibly fresh and well-delineated. There are oodles of concentrated red and black fruits, plenty of Provencal typicity, and a blockbuster finish that lasts well over a minute. This is prodigious stuff that should age into a monumental bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape in 7-10 years. It should live for two decades after that. DOMAINE DU CLOS DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf du Pape 'Les Safres' 2007 Bottle £26.95 This 100% Grenache wine is nothing less than dynamite in 2007, a mix of serious spice and lush, red-fruited, amazingly pure juice. Very fresh and very concentrated at once—we love just how easy it is to approach, but its true beauty lies in how it evolves in the glass. "Les Safres" echoes the terroir from which the wine is born—the sandy soils of "Bédines" delivers a wine of harmony and grace. "Deep, vivid red. Impressively fresh, sexy bouquet of dark berries, smoky herbs, minerals and Asian spices. Very precise flavors of sweet blackberry and boysenberry are nicely supported by fully absorbed tannins and gentle mineral snap. Already extremely alluring, this 100%-grenache wine finishes with outstanding clarity, spiciness and length. " 93 Points - International Wine Cellar DOMAINE DU CLOS DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf du Pape 'Quartz' 2005 Bottle £44.95 ROBERT PARKER 93-95 points 'The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz again offers a liqueur of minerals, has firm tannins, great intensity, and an inky ruby/purple color to the rim, a wonderfully sweet nose of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, with some smoke and a hint of pain grille. This superb wine has tremendous palate presence and great minerality and definition. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15 or more years...' DOMAINE DU CLOS DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf du Pape £35.95 'Quartz' 2006 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 90-92 points 'From quartz soils, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz possesses a dark ruby/purple color, a distinctive minerality (a characteristic of this cuvee), beautiful freshness, vibrant acidity, medium to full body, dense black cherry and cassis fruit flavors, and an intriguing floral component. The tannins are moderate in this beauty. Made more in the style of a grand cru Musigny than a typical Chateauneuf, it should drink well for 10-15 years. ' DOMAINE DU CLOS DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf du Pape £39.95 'Quartz' 2007 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 92-95 points 'Displaying more minerality, focus, and precision, the dark ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz possesses superb raspberry and black cherry fruit along with notes of crushed rocks and spring flowers. A layered, gorgeous, grand cru red Burgundy-styled Chateauneuf with excellent purity, freshness, and depth, it should drink nicely for 15 or more years.' DOMAINE DU CLOS DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf du Pape £64.95 Reserve 2006 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 91-93 points 'The opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Clos du Caillou Reserve is layered, ample, and full-bodied. The strongest and most complete wine of this group, it is a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah (the latter component is aged in new demi-muids). Reminiscent of the brilliant 1999 Clos du Caillou, it is elegant, rich, and full-bodied with intense fruit, crisp acidity, and beautiful length as well as power. Red Wine France - Rhone (S) Ch'neuf-du-Pape DOMAINE DU CLOS DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf du Pape £89.95 Reserve 2007 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 95-98 points Domaine du Caillou’s top cuvee is always the Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Caillou Reserve, and the 2007 boasts a dense purple color as well as an exquisite perfume of graphite, camphor, black currants, black cherries, raspberries, and notions of licorice and smoke providing additional complexity. This dense, full-bodied Clos du Caillou possesses exquisite equilibrium, flawless integration of acidity, tannin, and wood, and a sumptuous, full-bodied finish with no hard edges. That said, the tannins are elevated, and this wine begs for 2-5 years of bottle age. It should age effortlessly for 25 years thereafter. A reminder: the 1998, the first great vintage of this cuvee, is still a young wine at age 10. DOMAINE DU VIEUX TELEGRAPHE Chateauneuf- du-Pape £19.95 'Telegramme' Rouge 2008 Bottle A lovely wine in a vintage that turned out to be quite classic. It has the deep colour of perfectly ripe Grenache, without being inky black. The nose shows aromas of very ripe, almost stewed fruit. It has a light smokiness and a slight hint of sweetness that makes it very approachable, but without any heaviness. Among all these aromas it’s a note of cooked prune that returns after much aeration. ROBERT PARKER 'One of the few Chateauneuf du Pape estates to produce a second wine (a la most Bordeaux chateaux), Vieux Telegraphe's 2008 Telegramme Chateauneuf du Pape (100% Grenache) is a delicious, up-front, fruity, medium-bodied, soft effort displaying lots of herb-tinged strawberry and kirsch characteristics. It should drink well for 3-4 years. DOMAINE GRAND VENEUR Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 £22.95 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 90-93 points The superb 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a deep ruby/purple color followed by notes of cassis, black raspberries, licorice, charcoal, and a hint of camphor. It possesses superb concentration, full-bodied richness, great purity and texture, and a long finish that lasts 35-40 seconds. Drink it over the next 12-15+ years. DOMAINE MORDOREE Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Reine £54.95 Bois' 2006 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 92-95 points 'Since 1996, their Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has been one of the stars of the vintage. The blue/purple-hued 2006 exhibits aromas of charcoal, creme de cassis, roasted herbs, meat juices, licorice, and camphor. Full-bodied, dense, and concentrated with sweet tannin, adequate acidity, and a stunningly long finish (40+ seconds), this beauty is one of the vintage’s most complete and concentrated wines. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023. Christophe Delorme and his brother run this estate, which is clearly at the top of its game, producing a bevy of brilliant southern Rhone wines, red, white, and rose.' DOMAINE MORDOREE Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Reine £69.50 Bois' 2007 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 96-97+ points 'The purple-colored 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reine des Bois is loaded. Although still primary and backward, it reveals an extraordinary depth of juicy blackberry and cassis fruit interwoven with notes of roasted herbs, meat juices, camphor, and a touch of licorice. The wine boasts great depth, a superb texture, and a full-bodied richness nicely framed by high yet velvety tannins and fresh acidity. The vintage’s remarkable aromatic complexity and freshness are apparent in this big, substantial, authoritative wine. It will need 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20-25 years.' This superb Chateauneuf du Pape estate is run by Chrisophe Delorme and his brother from their cellars in Tavel. They produce spectacular Chateauneuf du Papes as well as top-notch Liracs, and glorious Cotes du Rhones and Tavel roses. Their Chateauneuf du Papes have been recognized by the village vignerons in their Festival of St.-Marc, where Mordoree frequently finishes first or second in those blind tastings. ROGER SABON Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Cuvee Prestige' £29.95 2004/06 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 91-94 points 'The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Prestige has a saturated dark ruby/purple-tinged color, beautiful texture, oodles of pure cassis and black cherry fruit, with a hint of licorice, smoke, and new saddle leather. It is a dense, chewy, full-bodied wine that has supple tannins and low acidity. It should drink beautifully for 15 or more years.' ROGER SABON Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Les Olivets' 2008 Bottle £20.95 The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540". A powerful and full bodied red wine made from 80 % Grenache, 10% Cinsualt and 10% Syrah from 40-60 years old vineyards, made by the top producer Roger Sabon from Chateauneuf du Pape. After vinification the wine ages in large oak casks for about 6-8 months. After bottling the wine ages some months in bottle for extra refinement. Pairs very well, with all kinds of red meats, wild boar, roast suckling pig and strong seasoned dishes. Drink temperature is 16-17° C. Drink until 30 - 40 years after the year of production. Red Wine France - Rhone (S) Ch'neuf-du-Pape ROGER SABON Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Reserve' 2007/08 £23.95 Bottle 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Pungent raspberry and blackberry aromas are complicated by minerals and dried flowers. Lively red fruit flavors gain depth in the middle palate and pick up a deeper cherry pit quality. The finish repeats the cherry note and leaves notes of licorice and smoky minerals behind. I'd give this a few more years of aging, at the least." Jean-Jacques Sabon and his family run this renowned estate which is consistently one of the reference points of Chateauneuf du Pape. What is probably confusing for consumers is that there are four different Chateauneuf du Papes, but the first three are available in good commercial quantities, with only the Le Secret des Sabon a limited cuvee of under 200 cases. VIEUX TELEGRAPHE Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Le Crau' (Red) £36.95 2008 Bottle The Vieux Télégraphe is a beautiful deep ruby colour; the nose is very fresh, with notes of menthol. The palate is velvety, and mirrors the freshness that was evident on the nose. The liquorice notes of the Grenache dominate the aromas at present. The richness and concentration of the wine is not as exuberant as the 2005 and 2007 vintages, but the wine is well balanced and smooth. The tannins are harmonious and ripe, and the finish is tight and elegant. It could be compared with 2006.' DANIEL BRUNIER This wine will evolve for 7-10 years. (S) Gigondas DOMAINE LES PALLIERES Gigondas 'Les Racines' 2008 Bottle £19.95 This wine is a complex ruby colour, though a little less deeply coloured than the Terrasse du Diable. The nose shows floral notes and a hint of sweetness, and indicates the smoothness and balance of the palate. It is silky, elegant, smooth and full bodied. The liquorice notes of the Grenache are evident, but here the old vines at Les Pallières give the wine additional elegance. An attractive finish; the full body and the silkiness make this parcel selection the more accessible one today.' DANIEL BRUNIER - ROBERT PARKER 89 points 'The 2008 Gigondas Les Racines Vieilles Vignes is composed of 80% Grenache and the rest Cinsault and Syrah from 50- to 70-year-old vines. Revealing more minerality, garrigue, raspberry and strawberry fruit, it is a mid-weight, elegant wine that represents one of the finest Gigondas made in this difficult vintage.' DOMAINE LES PALLIERES Gigondas 'Terrasse du Diable' 2008 £19.95 Bottle The wine is a selection from the Domaine’s terraced vineyards at an altitude of 250-400 metres above sea level. The wine is quite a deep ruby colour. The nose shows grey pepper and slight Kirsch notes. These characteristics of the Terroir are particularly expressive in this wine, our new selection of vineyard parcels (first produced in the 2007 vintage). On the palate it is complex, full bodied and fresh. The tannins are evident, with a touch of minerality on the firm finish, which has flavours of very concentrated liquorice that border on bitterness.' DANIEL BRUNIER ROBERT PARKER 'The 2008 Gigondas Les Terraces de Diable (80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Clairette, is peppery, spicy and well-made in a very difficult vintage for Gigondas, it should drink well for 4-6 years.' DOMAINE SANTA DUC Gigondas 'Prestige des Hautes £21.95 Garrigue' 2005/06 Bottle ROBERT PARKER 93-95 points 'The luxury cuvee is called Les Hautes Garrigues, named after the plateau of head-pruned old vines this comes from. A blend of 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah and Cinsault aged in barrique, this has been a fabulous wine. (The 1989 is just hitting full stride.) The 2006 is sumptuous, with a dense purple color, beautiful opulence, fresh fruit, good acidity, and fabulous depth and richness. Why can’t the majority of producers in Gigondas hit such heights as consistently as Yves Gras does? Give this wine 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades. DOMAINE SANTA DUC Gigondas 'Tradition' 2009 Bottle £14.95 ROBERT PARKER 91-93 points 'A blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault, the 2007 Gigondas Tradition exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with aromas of blue and black fruits, licorice, camphor, spice, and underbrush. Full-bodied with outstanding fruit purity, a layered texture, decent acidity, sweet tannin, and a long, rich, concentrated finish, it should drink beautifully for 12-15 or more years.' One of the reference points of Gigondas as well as one of the model winemaking estates in the southern Rhone that of Yves Gras, his beloved Domaine Santa Duc. He also produces some negociant wines, which are marketed under the Santa Duc Selections moniker. Under the Domaine Santa Duc label, Gras produces one of the best buys in Cotes du Rhone, his Les Quatres Terres. (S) Rasteau ROGER SABON Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Reserve' 2005 Bottle £23.95 ROBERT PARKER 90 points 'The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve is an even bigger wine than the 2006, more tannic, with greater density but again the classic fig, garrigue, tobacco leaf, kirsch, and meaty notes. In the finish, the tannins kick in. This wine definitely needs 2-3 years of cellaring, but is outstanding in richness and depth and should age nicely for 15 or more years. In most years there are between 1,000 and 1,500 cases of the Reserve.' Page 43 of 90
