CHATEAU L'ARROSEE Grand Cru Classe Saint-Emilion 2009
Bottle
DECANTER MAGAZINE ****
£33.78
Clearly a distinguished wine. Long, linear, fresh. Elegant bouquet. Finely worked tannins. Drink
2015-2028. (17 points)
ROBERT PARKER 92-94 points
This outstanding l’Arrosee is consistent with the Burgundian style that this terroir routinely
produces. Never massive, at its best it offers intense flavors of kirsch, raspberry, crushed rock,
and spice box. The full-bodied flavors are ethereal in their delicacy. Full, but stylish, precise,
intense, and never heavy, this beauty can be drunk early or cellared for two decades or more.
(Tasted three times.)
CHATEAU LE TERTRE ROTEBOUEF Grand Cru Saint-Emilion £119.50
1999 Bottle
Château Tertre Roteboeuf's fine reputation is relatively recent, dating from when François
Mitjavile took over management in 1997. After inheriting a small (less than 6-hectare) estate
on the southern part of the St. Emilion slope, François Mitjavile perfected his winemaking
skills with help from Thierry Manoncourt of Château Figeac. Located in the south-east part of
the appellation, Tertre Roteboeuf has clay-limestone soil and a fine microclimate. Grape
varieties are approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Tertre Roteboeuf is the
opposite of a rough wine. Its tannins are incredibly soft and the Merlot gives it an opulent
side. This shows the owner's talent for obtaining healthy, ripe grapes without the need for
green harvesting (bunch thinning). This results in a voluptuous, full-bodied, and very complex
wine.
CLOS DE SARPE Grand Cru Saint-Emilion 2005 Bottle
£59.95
ROBERT PARKER 94-96 points 'This is a wine for readers with incredibly long life-expectancies
as it possesses the power and longevity associated with many pre-phylloxera, 19th century
wines of Bordeaux. Like so many of the small St.-Emilion estates, there are no compromises
at Clos de Sarpe. It will be bottled unfiltered. This opaque purple-colored, massive, ferociously
tannic offering reveals scary concentration levels, huge dry extract, and technical numbers
that are off the charts. Despite its impressive credentials, size, richness, and overall balance, it
will close down after bottling, and re-emerge 10-15 years later. My conservative guess is that
this gigantic, colossal St.-Emilion will be drinkable around 2015-2020, and last for 40-50 years.'
CLOS FOURTET 1iere Grand Cru Classe (B) Saint-Emilion 2009 £74.95
Bottle
DECANTER MAGAZINE 4****
Round, caressing. Lovely volume of succulent fruit. Shows the ripeness of the year. Polished
and refined. Drink 2016-2035. (17.5 points)
TIM ATKIN MW 95 points
14.8% alcohol. 88M, 8CS, 8CF - The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is lower than usual at
this much improved
property, but its inclusion in the blend still adds freshness to a wine that carries its high
alcohol lightly. This is aromatic and balanced, with sweet blackcurrant and plum fruit, smooth
tannins and good concentration. Surprisingly fresh on the palate. 15+ years.
ROBERT PARKER 95-98
This is a perennial superstar thanks to the efforts of proprietor Philippe Cuvelier and the
estate’s manager, Tony Ballu. This beautifully-situated, nearly 48-acre vineyard, high on the
clay and deep limestone plateau just adjacent to the town walls of St.-Emilion, was harvested
between September 28 and October 13, with yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare. The natural
alcohol turned out to be 14%. A magical wine, it may have a hard time eclipsing the 2005, but it
is another prodigious effort in its own right. The dense purple color offers up notes of white
chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, crushed rock, and white flowers. Textured, full-bodied,
enormously pure, and voluptuously textured, it is nearly too easy to drink because of the
exquisite balance and seamless integration of all its component parts. This is a killer Clos
Fourtet that should drink well young yet evolve for 20+ years. (Tasted five times.)
MONDOT 2nd Wine of Ch. Troplong-Mondot Saint-Emilion £26.95
2008 Bottle
***** TASTING NOTE FOR CHATEAU TROPLONG-MONDOT 2008 ***** - ROBERT PARKER 95-97
'What a worthy rival to the prodigious 2005! This is another superb success from proprietress
Christine Valette, but it is distressing to hear that this property may be up for sale. The
inky/blue/purple-colored, formidably concentrated 2008 exhibits aromas of smoke, blueberry
and blackberry liqueur, roasted coffee, and spice box. Boasting fabulous fruit and purity, a
multilayered texture, full body, and prominent, but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this is a
tour de force in winemaking from an outstanding and a perfectionist proprietor. Give it 5-6
years of bottle age, and drink it over the following three decades.'
PETIT CORBIN DESPAGNE 2nd Wine of Grand
£14.95
Corbin-Despagne 2006/08 Bottle
A fresh and elegant wine coming from a specially selected parcel at Château Grand Corbin
Despagne. There is excellent balance of fruit, acidity and supple but persistent tannins which
indicate a wine which will continue to improve with age.
Saint-Estephe
Red Wine
France - Bordeaux
Saint-Estephe
CHATEAU CALON-SEGUR 3ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe £49.95
2008 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 90-93 points '"Perhaps that explains the elegant, but rich style of the 2008
Calon Segur, which is dominated more than usual by Cabernet Sauvignon. Cropped at 40
hectoliters per hectare, it is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 2% Petit
Verdot. Its sweet perfume of black currants, tobacco leaf, and licorice is followed by a wine
with superb purity, good freshness, and a full-bodied style with ripe tannin as well as a long
finish. Somewhat reminiscent of the 1996, although this vintage carries a much higher
percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2008 should be relatively approachable given the
sweetness of the tannins, and will evolve for 20-25 years.'
CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL 2ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe £164.50
1986 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 93 points - "The 1986 is a highly extracted wine, with a black/ruby color
(some pink is showing in the rim) and plenty of toasty, smoky notes in its bouquet that
suggest ripe plums, licorice and black currants. Evolving at a glacial pace, it exhibits massive,
huge, ripe, extremely concentrated flavors with impressive depth and richness. It possesses
more power, weight, and tannin, and it is a wine for long-term ageing. Anticipated maturity:
now-2020."
Jancis Robinson 17/20 - "Lovely deep crimson shading to purple. Particularly healthy colour.
Deep, dense, strongly Cabernet aromas that are still unyielding. This wine could mature into
something eventually finer than the Talbot but, boy, will it take time."
CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL 2ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe £99.50
1999 Bottle
Cos d’Estournel is the probably the greatest St-Estèphe. Only Montrose comes close to
stealing the title, but Cos is the more classic claret. This great Second Growth is
extraordinarily consistent, year after year turning out a wine with a perfectly judged balance
between structure and fleshy fruit. The owners have embraced modernity in the best possible
way, using technology judiciously to produce a modern wine which is still unmistakably
Bordeaux. ROBERT PARKER (2002) 88 points 'The dark ruby-colored 1999 Cos is a supremely
elegant effort. The wine offers notes of dried Provencal herbs, smoke, licorice, black cherries,
and cassis. This medium to full-bodied St.-Estephe is cerebral, intellectual, and refined.
Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.'
CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL 2ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe £94.50
2002 Bottle/NC
ROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS - "One of the candidates for wine of the vintage, this beauty has a
dense purple color to the rim and a classic, noble nose of graphite intermixed with black
currant, spice box, licorice, and red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied with exceptional
precision and definition, this beautifully textured wine stands out as one of the most
successful wines of this irregular vintage. A brilliant effort, it should be at its best between
2008 and 2020."
CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL 2ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe £89.50
2007 Bottle
DECANTER MAGAZINE **** 18 points 'Dense purple-red, full, plummy, smoky, fleshy, spicy,
exotic fruit, with more firmness than usual from the 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, about as ripe as
you could get this vintage with fine length and potential complexity. Drink 2012-25.'
JANCIS ROBINSON 17 points 'Determinedly, almost exaggeratedly, modern style. Firm, very
concentrated nose. Something strange on the nose – very distinctive. Extremely
concentrated! And then reasonably supple on the palate – but quite low acid and freshness. A
certain rawness but great attack and beef. One of the most distinctive wines of the vintage
but a bit forced. All created by the early cutting of the shoots in June – taking a risk that the
summer would not be hot. (Otherwise the fruit risked being sunburnt.) Strictly for
modernists.'
ROBERT PARKER 90-93 points
CHATEAU COS LABORY 5ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe 2005 £34.95
Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 89 points 'One of the finest wines I have tasted from this estate, the 2005
Cos Labory exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, aromas of road tar, blackberries, creme de cassis,
forest floor, smoke, and graphite, medium to full body, and abundant tannin. It is a complete,
dense effort with high tannins in the finish. Once the tannins melt away, it should represent
an outstanding example of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.'
NEIL PINEL 8/10 - Our Saint-Estephe of the vintage, quality and value for money wise. Excellent
ripe, black wine gums and cassis aromas and flavours, Clean, creamy with good depth and
length. Very, very good !
CHATEAU COS LABORY 5ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe 2006 £19.95
Bottle
This Chateau is fantastically situated alongside Cos d’Estournel and over-looking Lafite.
DECANTER 3*** - 'Good colour, good jammy fruit, ripe and smooth, fruit/acidity/tannins in
balance, quite forward style. 2010-18.'
www.winedoctor.com "Lots of sweet oak here, a honey-tinged, blackberry crumble nose with
plenty of similarly sweet fruit. Nicely textured on the palate, a dry and structured midpalate,
with grainy tannins. Quite a firm grip, with a good, savoury finish. Overall this is well put
together although there is a lot of oak and structure for the fruit."
