NINO NEGRI 'Sfursat 5' Stella Valtellina 2006 Bottle
£39.95
Made from air dried Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo). It reveals a sweet, open bouquet along with an
expansive palate of dark fruit. The wine possesses notable up-front beauty, but the intensity
drops off rather markedly on the mid-palate, where the wine’s tannins are imposing.
Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015.
Molise
CIANFAGNA Tintilia del Molise 'Sartor' 2008 Bottle
£23.95
This is an unusual grape variety (Tintila), orginally from Spain and fewer than 100 hectares are
still cultivated. It is simply delicious, packed full of vibrant aromatic fruit and yes you could say
it really is a 'Artisanal wine'. Dunell's - We showcased this wine at a recent food and wine
event at Tassili and enjoyed this wine with a slow braised beef cheek dish. It was a fantastic
match. We highly recommend this wine as it represents unbelieveable value at this price. A
wow factor wine!
LUCIANO SANDRONE Dolcetto d'Alba 2008(09) Bottle
£13.95
ROBERT PARKER 'The 2008 Dolcetto d-Alba is a pretty, mid-weight offering with attractive
dark fruit, licorice, spices and a characteristic slightly bitter (but not unpleasant) note on the
finish. Like so many Dolcettos in 2008, a measure of concentration that this wine usually
shows is missing. Still, this is one of the more polished, refined Dolcettos of the vintage.
Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.
Luciano Sandrone's entry-level wines show all the class and elegance that are the hallmarks of
this producer's house style.'
AZIENDA BENANTI Rosso Rovittello 2004 Bottle
£24.95
THE WINE ADVOCATE 90 points 'The 2004 Etna Rosso Rovitello (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello
Cappuccino) is a deeply-colored, intense wine loaded with dark red fruits, spices, earthiness
and minerals. The wine shows terrific density and purity which carries all the way through to
the long finish. Today this firm, vibrant red remains quite primary and in need of further
bottle age, but it should develop beautifully. The Rovitello could easily pass as a first rate
Nebbiolo in a blind tasting. This is a gorgeous effort from Benanti. Anticipated maturity:
2009-2016.'
BORGO SELENE Rosso Nero d'Avola-Nerello Mascalese 2010
Bottle
£5.95
The Borgo Selene wines represent great value for money. A blend of Nero d'Avola and Nerello
Mascalese, the grapes for this wine were brought to full ripeness by the hot Sicilian sun, while
the flavours that make the wines so characterful were preserved modern winemaking
techniques.
Tasting Notes: Lovely nose with ripe cherry fruit and hints of plain chocolate and spice. Bright
and lively on the palate with juicy cherry and plum. Very appealing wine that can be drunk all
year round and can be easily matched with food. A must for your everyday drinking rack!
COS Frappato 2009/10 Bottle
£14.45
The Frappato offers up dried cherries, flowers, sweet herbs and tobacco in a pretty,
mid-weight style. The finish is long, delicate and refined. The Frappato is 70% Frappato and
30% Nero d’Avola aged in stainless steel. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014.
DI MAJO NORANTE Sangiovese 2009 Bottle
£8.95
The 2009 Sangiovese Terre degli Osci is rich and full-bodied in its dark cherries, plums,
cinnamon, cola and chocolate. This is a decidedly rich Sangiovese layered with generous oak,
but within this style it is an attractive wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.
DONNAFUGATA Sherazade IGT 2010 Bottle
£9.95
The wine is made in a lush, spicy style to fit with her exotic personality. Sherazade is made
from Nero d’Avola and Syrah grapes planted at approximately 5,000 vines/hectare, trained
using a counterespalier system and spur pruning. The resulting wine is bright, deep ruby red in
colour, with youthful violet hints. On the nose it has perfumes which combine red fruit, sour
cherries and a mineral note. Full-bodied but still fresh on the palate, the fruit is more
blackberries with a touch of chocolate, soft, ripe tannins and a good balance through to the
finish.
PALARI Santo Stefano Briga Faro 2005/06 Bottle
£39.95
Since the beginning of antiquity the Faro area in the hills above Messina has been producing
some of Sicily's most elegant wines. Wine making in these parts was flourishing as far back as
the 14th century BC. However like the rest of Europe the area was devastated by Phylloxera
and production dropped off dramatically in the last century. By 1985 the DOC Faro was
virtually extinct! Faro means lighthouse and is probably Italy's smallest DOC with only 6
hectares in production. The enticing ruby colour leads to a nose of black cherry with smakoey
nuances lingering in the background. The balance of the palate is remarkable with not in sniff
of over ripeness or clumsy tannins that often dominate Sicilian wines. This wine is all elegance
with notes of scrubland, pencil and balsamic. Stunning wine!
VILLA TONINO Nero D'Avola 2009 Bottle
£7.45
A blend of fruit sourced from two different vineyards, one near Marsala and the other in
central Italy. Good colour and a ripe, plummy and generous fruit on the palate. Smooth and
soft tannins with an elegant and long finish.
Taurasi
Red Wine
Italy
Taurasi
TERREDORA Taurasi DOCG 2004 Bottle
£22.95
A sweet cherry nose and extremely fine strawberry and raspberry fruit are reminiscent of a
good Chambolle-Musigny, then full, fine and long with hints of cigar box. Taurasi is perhaps
the top red denomination of the Italian South.
Umbria
FALESCO Vitiano Rosso 2009 Bottle
£10.45
Vitiano have tried to achieve a young red wine with explosive, luscious aromatic fragrance.
This wine has a wonderful, deep, intense ruby red colour with important, solid, and wide
organoleptic qualities, but above all it exalts the food it is combined with. It is very rich in
polyphenols which harmonize with its fresh, tasty acidity. It is versatile red, quite innovative
in style which can be appreciated immediately. It adapts easily to various dishes and can be
drunk litghtheartedly drawing great pleasure from the sharp fragrance of its perfumes and its
straightforward character. It should be drunk in wide crystal chalices where it can best
develop its bouquet at a temperature of 18-19°C.
ALLEGRINI Amarone Classico (Corvina) 2007 Bottle/NC
£47.95
Franco Allegrini stands head and shoulders above all other growers in Valpolicella, an ultra
modernist who believes in freshness and purity of flavour, his wines are quite unlike any
others from the area. Intense ruby red. Warm and spicy bouquet, with aromas of raisins. This
is due to the fact that the grapes are allowed to partially dry prior to fermenting.
Well-structured, complex, elegant and velvety. Amarone has a distinctive flavor because of its
unique production method. An extremely important wine in Italian viticulture, Amarone is an
exclusive and unique symbol of the Valpolicella region. Over the course of time, Allegrini has
improved its production method with the goal being to best preserve the characteristics of
the fruit whilst drying. Enjoy 2011 - 2017. A blend of 80% Corvina, 15% Rondinella and 5% Oseleta.
ALLEGRINI La Grola (Corvina) 2006/07/08 Bottle
£16.95
A full-bodied wine, intense and elegant. Deep ruby red in colour, it has a wide and embracing
bouquet with scents of wild berries and juniper, tobacco and coffee essences. Made from
Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, Syrah and Sangiovese grapes grown in La Grola, one of the
most prestigious vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico area in terms both of history and
position. The high plant density and the resulting low yield work together to give this wine its
unique concentration. It can age for 10 - 12 years. It makes a perfect partner for red meat,
either roast or in brown sauces, especially lamb. It is also delicious with stewed or grilled
mushrooms and with mellow, aged cheeses.
ALLEGRINI Palazzo della Torre (Corvina) 2008 Bottle
£14.95
ROBERT PARKER 90 points (2007) 'Allegrini's Palazzo della Torre (70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella,
5% Sangiovese) has long been one of my favorite ripasso-style wines and the 2004 is another
winner. It reveals a plump, juicy personality loaded with perfumed, jammy fruit, roasted
coffee beans and new leather. Although it is absolutely irresistible today, a few additional
months of bottle age should help soften the wine further. It is a gorgeous effort at this level
and a terrific value...Anticipated maturity: 2007-2010. This is a terrific set of consistently
excellent to outstanding wines from Allegrini. Readers will also find a number of value-priced
wines that offer notable quality for the money.'
ALLEGRINI Valpolicella (Classico) (Corvina) 2008/09/10* £8.95
Bottle
60% Corvina Veronese, 35% Rondinella and 5% Molinara - This fruity Valpolicella offers luscious
aromas of cherry, herbs, chocolate and mocha, with a medium body and balanced acidity.
Lively and easy to drink, with moderate tannins and a bright, vivacious color, this wine is best
enjoyed young to appreciate the exuberant and intense fruitiness. Recommended with
antipasti and lighter pasta dishes. Valpolicella also complements seafood and lightly grilled
white meats.
ALLEGRINI Villa Giona IGT 2000 Bottle
£35.95
San Pietro in Cariano - This splendid property has 5 hectares in the heart of Valpolicella
Classico. A blend of 50% Cab. Sauv., 40% Merlot and 10% Syrah it has a deep colour and ripe
berryish fruit on the nose. Good richness on the mid palate and supple tannins. The wine was
aged in new French oak for 18 months prior to bottling. The structure of the Cabernet is
softened by the Merlot, with the blend of these two being given an attractive spiciness by the
Syrah.
ROBERT PARKER 91 points '.....one of the few convincing examples of these grapes in the
Valpolicella.....offers an intense and penetrating combination of berry fruit and leather
aromas and forceful but shapely flavors, solid, graceful and with much length. Drink:
2004-2014.'
ALPHA ZETA Amarone 'A' 2008 Bottle
£23.95
Alpha Zeta was started in 1999 when David Gleave and New Zealand winemaker, Matt
Thompson, set out to produce a range of modern, fruit-forward wines from the hills outside
Verona. Their aim was to work closely with the local growers to obtain high quality grapes by
reducing yields and harvesting later in the season. The grapes are picked in mid-September
and left to dry in specially ventilated rooms until the end of January, when they were
destemmed and crushed. This Amarone was matured in oak for 18 months, lightly fined with
egg whites, and then bottled.
Composed of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, this aromatic
Amarone displays bold notes of black cherry, plum, and fruit cake on the nose. Full bodied and
rich on the palate, pronounced flavors of cherry, vanilla, and coffee lead to a lingering finish. It
is an ideal pairing for roasted red meat entrees.
