CHATEAU LATOUR 1iere Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 1989 Bottle
£485.00
For many, Chateau Latour is probably the most iconic name in the world of fine wine. Located
in Pauillac, yet close to the commune's border with St Julien, Latour's 65ha are located closer
to the river than the other First Growths in the Medoc. Many regard it as the leading Premier
Cru, and in the eternal quest to find 'the wine of the vintage' it is frequently Latour that
comes out on top. Typically 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot
& Cabernet Franc, one strength is said to be that it outperforms in weaker vintages, and so
when the weather has not been so favourable it is perhaps to Latour that buyers of top
clarets often look first. The wine also has a phenomenal propensity for ageing well, with many
tasters remarking that the 1899, 1900 & 1928 come high in their list of candidates for favourite
vintage - ever! Tasting: An evolved dark ruby colour reveals amber at the edge. The nose
offers aromas of caramel, coffee, ripe black cherry and currant fruit, cedar, and spice box. It
is a very fine, delicious Latour.
CHATEAU LATOUR 1iere Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 1990 Bottle
£795.00
The 1990 Chateau Latour, which was voted Wine Spectator Wine of the year in 2003 was
accorded a rating of 100pts by both Wine Spectator and Robert Parker, ie Perfect!.The wine
has an excellent nose, very complex, ultra smooth and fine tannins. Layers of complex aromas
of roasted fruits, liquorice, chocolate, caramel, dark cherry...The mouth has an incredible
volume, full and fat, perfectly balanced with an endless finish.
CHATEAU LATOUR 1iere Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 1995 Bottle
£595.00
ROBERT PARKER 96 points: "A beauty, the opaque dense purple-colored 1995 exhibits jammy
cassis, vanillin, and minerals in its fragrant but still youthful aromatics. Medium to full-bodied,
with exceptional purity, superb concentration, and a long, intense, ripe, 40-second finish, this
is a magnificent example of Latour. As the wine sat in the glass, scents
of roasted espresso and toasty new oak emerged. This classic will require considerable
cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050."
CHATEAU LATOUR 1iere Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 2004 £545.00
Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 95-97 points
'After a 2003 production of less than 10,000 cases, there are a whopping 15,000 cases of the
2004 Latour... At this early stage, Latour appears to be the wine of the Medoc, and provides
additional evidence of why Latour is pushing slightly ahead of most of its first-growth rivals. It
boasts an inky/purple color in addition to a sweet perfume of crushed rocks, black currants,
raspberries, and hints of wood as well as cold steel. It reveals the most density and depth of
any of the Medoc first-growths...Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030'
CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1ere Grand Cru Classe £475.00
Pauillac 1998 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER - "Deep garnet-black. The nose is a little mute even given this wine’s youth,
providing a moderate intensity of evolving aromas: game, earth, blackcurrant jam and a whiff
of dried herbs. The medium+ bodied palate is gently styled with a medium+ level of finely
grained tannins and medium+ acidity. Mid-palate is a bit hollow and the finish perhaps not as
long as I’d expect. Good wine but not exactly living up to its first growth status. Drink now to
2025. Tasted February 2009."
CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1ere Grand Cru Classe £395.00
Pauillac 2001 Bottle
"Very smoky, with berry, coffee and tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with polished velvety
tannins, plenty of fruit and a cedary aftertaste. Tight and compacted. This is better than the
2000 Mouton. It's a baby 1986 Mouton. Solid and very, very fine. Persists for a long time on
the palate. Best after 2009." – James Suckling, Mar 2004
"Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has another outstanding
bouquet with notes of blackberry, wild hedgerow, graphite and a touch of orange peel. Great
delineation and vigour, a little more generous than Lafite that overtakes after an hour in
bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, superb acidity, great depth but
perhaps just missing the persistency and vigour of the Lafite. Great minerality on the tobacco
and autumn leaf-finish. Tasted March 2011." 94 points - Neal Martin, Robert Parker's Wine
Advocate, March 2011
CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1ere Grand Cru Classe £399.50
Pauillac 2007 Bottle
DECANTER **** (18 points): 'Black-red, exotic blackcurrant fruit, but more restrained than
usual, shows great clarity and class with more precision of fruit than in the 1990s, a very fine
wine that will give enormous pleasure. Drink 2013-25.'
JANCIS ROBINSON MW 18 points: 'Deep purple and light nose – you do have to concentrate to
find the first growth nature of this. Dense with a dry finish and some fine tannins. Just a little
dilute but the fruit is ripe enough (even if the tannins aren’t quite). Almost opulent – certainly
good round fruit. Just a bit stringy on the finish. Cool and light after the 2006… Big mistake
to serve the 2006 alongside! So much more there …'
CHATEAU PICHON LALANDE 'Comtesse' 2ieme Cru Classe £99.50
Pauillac 2004 Bottle
Robert Parker 92 points - "The 2004 Pichon Lalande is a strong effort for the vintage (much
better than their underwhelming and much more expensive 2005). A blend of 53% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a deep
ruby/purple color as well as scents of cocoa, espresso roast, black cherries, and cassis. Medium
to full-bodied, opulent, and fleshy, this classic wine cuts a stylistic persona somewhere
between the 1995 and 1996. It can be drunk now or cellared for two decades."
CHATEAU PICHON LALANDE 'Comtesse' 2ieme Cru Classe £109.50
Pauillac 2006 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 95 points "The 2006 Pichon Lalande, which blows away the 2005, represents
a return to the velvety-textured, rich, sexy style most readers would associate with Pichon
Lalande. This blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot no Petit Verdot was included in
the final blend exhibits a dense purple color as well as abundant aromas of chocolate, coffee,
cedar, black currants, and a subtle touch of smoke, a rich, savory, full-bodied mouthfeel,
plump, fleshy fruit, and a superb finish. This is a 21st century version of the brilliant 1996.
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2030.
CHATEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE-BARON 2ieme Cru Classe £115.00
Pauillac 2001 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 93 Points - "A very successful effort for this vintage in the Medoc, this deep
ruby/purple-colored Pauillac exhibits class/nobility/breed along with black currant liqueur,
licorice, and incense notes. Sweet, expansive, fleshy, and medium to full-bodied, with good
structure, ripe tannin, and a long, 30-35 second finish, it can be drunk now, but will be even
better in 2-3 years; it will last for 12-15 years. I had this wine three separate times out of bottle,
and it is performing significantly better than it did from cask."
CHATEAU PICHON-LONGUEVILLE-BARON 2ieme Cru Classe £84.50
Pauillac 2006 Bottle
ROBERT PARKER 92 POINTS: "Closed but promising, this is a tannic, masculine style of wine in
2006, with an inky bluish/purple color as well as aromas of incense, charcoal, smoked meats,
and the classic creme de cassis that one finds in the top Pauillacs. The aromatics are still
retrained, but the wine is full-bodied in the mouth, tannic, backward, and set for a relatively
long life. This is not one of the profound wines from Pichon Longueville Baron, but it is
certainly a top-flight success for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028. Tasted Feb
2009"
CHATEAU PONTET CANET 5ieme Cru Classe 2002 Bottle
£85.95
Located adjacent to Mouton in Pauillac, this estate has been in top form in recent years and
now routinely produces wines of near-first growth class, with rich, concentrated cassis fruit
and lush texture. Vineyards date to the early eighteenth century, and the soil is extremely
gravelly and drains well, characteristic of the best growing sites in Bordeaux. Pontet-Canet
has one of the largest productions of any classified growth in the Medoc with a production of
nearly 20,000 cases of its grand vin. Rated: 91 by Stephen Tanzer "Red-ruby. Cool aromas of
blackcurrant, espresso and menthol. Then sweet and pliant in the mouth, with concentrated,
very pure currant, chocolate and mint flavors. Wonderfully smooth for the vintage. Broadens
out impressively on the back end, finishing with firm, ripe tannins. St. Julien"
CHATEAU PONTET CANET 5ieme Cru Classe 2003 Bottle
£119.95
CHATEAU PONTET CANET 5ieme Cru Classe Pauillac 1995 £99.95
Bottle
ROBERT PARKER - 92 points - "An old style Pauillac, yet made with far more purity and
richness than the estate's ancient vintages, this broad-shouldered, muscular, classic wine
exhibits a saturated purple color, and sensationally dense, rich, concentrated, cassis flavors
that roll over the palate with impressive purity and depth."
Enjoyable classic aroma, solid, full-bodied, smooth, balanced and rich. This is a wine to hold
for a long time in your glass and enjoy.
CHATEAU PONTET CANET 5ieme Cru Classe Pauillac 2004 £64.95
Bottle
DECANTER MAGAZINE 4**** 'Deep, intense colour, richly concentrated nose, quite earthy and
blackcurrant, a lot of elegance behind the concentration and a fine lift of florality to the fruit,
very good balance and length. Drink 2012-30. (18 points)'
ROBERT PARKER 92-94 points 'A brilliant effort from proprietor Alfred Tesseron,
Pontet-Canet’s 2004 may ultimately prove to be a better wine than its more famous neighbor,
Mouton Rothschild. Medium to full-bodied with a classic creme de cassis-scented perfume,
sweet fruit, ripe tannin, tremendous purity...this beautiful Pauillac should age for 2-3 decades.
It is one of the most concentrated and potentially long-lived wines of the vintage.'
CHATEAU PONTET CANET 5ieme Cru Classe Pauillac 2007 £59.95
Bottle/NC
ROBERT PARKER 91-94 points
JANCIS ROBINSON 16.5 points 'Quite rich and sweet on the nose. Not very Pauillac-like! Good,
firm tannins on the palate. A creditable attempt to spin some interest out of this vintage.
But pretty low key. Tannins almost too dominant. Watery finish. But there is no shortage of
effort here and the wine should have a longer life than many. Just a bit too like sandpaper in
terms of texture. Drink 2013-18'
DECANTER MAGAZINE **** (17.5 points) 'Intense deep red, nose still shut in, but shows fine
intensity of concentration and very good, plummy middle palate, smoky and quite complex,
good length and good in this vintage. Drink 2013-20.'
