NIKKA Pure Malt 'Black' Half Litre (50cl)
43.0%alc
£35.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE -95 POINTS - 'An exquisitely crafted nose; studied peat in
luxuriant yet deft proportions nestling amid some honeyed malt and oak. The balance
between sweet and dry is faultless. There is neither a single off-note nor a ripple of
disharmony. The kind of nose you can sink your head into and simply disappear; for all the
evident peat, this is a medium-weighted, the subtlety encashed in a gentle cloak of oil; long,
silky, fabulously weighted peat running a sweet course through some surging malt and
liquorice tones with a bit of salt in there for zip.'
NIKKA Pure Malt 'White' Half Litre (50cl)
43.0%alc
£35.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 92 POINTS - Massive, Islay-style peat with a fresh sea kick
thanks to brine amid the barley; again, the peat-reek hangs firmly on the tastebuds from the
word go, the sweetness of the barley tempered by some drying oaky notes suggesting
reasonable age. Lots of subtle oils bind the complexity; liquorice and salt combine to create a
powerful malty-oak combo. An oily, kippery smokiness continues to the very end; a big peaty
number displaying the most subtle of hands.'
NIKKA YOICHI 10 Year Old Single Malt Bottle (70cl)
£64.95
45.0%alc
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE -93 POINTS - 'Big oak influence: bourbony in character with ripe
plums, too. One assumes local oak has been used; seriously big bourbon character: massively
sweet, rich deep barley and the lightest rumble of peat; gentle, oily with some molassed sugar
on the rolling smoke; this is a seriously big whiskey for the serious whiskey drinker. Amazingly
high-quality malt where the wood plays the dominant role but leaves space enough for malt
development. '
PENDERYN Single Malt Bottle (70cl)
46.0%alc
£33.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 89 POINTS - 'A sharp freshness from the Madeira casks is very
apparent; there is a boiled sweet fruitiness also while the malt is ethereal; big malt weight
defies the nose, clean yet pleasantly cluttered; the fruit returns here for a surprisingly chunky
contest with thick malt; exceptional balance and charisma for a whisky so young.'
£22.95
Johnnie Walker Red Label, with its distinctive and exuberant flavour was created to be drunk
as a long drink - a favourite choice for celebrating every day. It was originally known as Extra
Special Old Highland Whisky, and was introduced as Red Label in 1909 to suit a new
generation of whisky drinkers. The world's best selling whisky is still going strong. Red Label is
a powerful combination of spicy, smoky malts, such as Talisker, and lingering, lighter grains.
Its robust qualities are what make it so good for drinking long.
SILVER BARLEY Blended Scotch Bottle (70cl)
£15.95
Very young, drying hay. Quite refreshing with a minty whiff. A hint of butterscotch. Smooth
and sweet at start. Leafy. Green wood takes over, developing on bitter notes. Quite short,
not especially elegant. A very young, new-make like whisky.
DeLuxe
DIMPLE HAIG 15 Year Old De Luxe Whisky Bottle (70cl) £29.95
A classic deluxe blend that has stood the test of time. Based on Glenkinchie with traces of
other more northerly distilleries, Dimple benefits from an extended marrying period. Rich,
smooth and complex.
JOHNNIE WALKER Green Label Bottle (70cl)
£33.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 92 POINTS - 'This is one of the best vatted noses on the market:
superb complexity, relatively peatless but still boasting big weight amid some fresher
Speyside notes; bingo! Serious flavour explosion which leans towards malty sweetness with a
gradual fade-in of drier oak; now some oils arrive, plus a little mint suggesting good age; this
is easily one of the best vatted malts in the market, pretty sweet, too.'
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE -87 POINTS - 'Buttery, fresh, soft a pinch of coke-smoke, very
complex, with some apples thrown in; sweet, silky, natural cream-toffee and vanilla: the malt
intensity is phenomenal, the weight on the palete confident and rewarding; remains gentle
with further vanilla which is chewy and long. Some really tantalising spices make a late extra
additon; an immensely soft and soothing dram showing rich creamy style. I have tasted the
last two bottlings, the last of which was in march 2003. And I have to say it is getting better
and better.'
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE -91 POINTS - 'Big, fruity, firm, a threat of smoke, weighty;
well-muscled malt surge followed by clean fruity tones, immaculate mouth-presence and
bitter-sweet balance; long, tapering fruit-malt residue, some brown sugar coating and
uncomplicated oak; simply one of the great Highland malt whiskies at just the perfect age:
what I would do to see this unplugged at 46% minimum and no bottling hall interference.'
DALWHINNIE 15 Year Old Malt Bottle (70cl)
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 94 POINTS - 'Sublime stuff: a curious mixture of coke smoke
and peat-reek wafts teasingly over the gently honied malt. A hint of melon offers some fruit
but the caressing malt stars; that rarest of combinations: at once silky and malt intense, yet
at the same time peppery and tin-hat time for the tastebuds, but the silk wins out and a
sheen of barley sugar coats everything, soft peat included; some cocoa and coffee notes, yet
the pervading slightly honied sweetness means that there is no bitterness that cannot be
controlled; a malt it is hard to decide whether to drink or bath in: I suggest you do both.'
GLENFIDDICH 12 Year Old Reserve Malt Bottle (70cl)
£29.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 80 POINTS - 'Delicious malt but perhaps a touch too much
caramel subtracts from the otherwise juicy maltiest. Just not the same as the old (younger)
version. Much flatter and less fun than its predecessor.' The first spirit flowed from the stills
at The Glenfiddich Distillery on Christmas Day 1887. Since then, the quality of Glenfiddich
Special Reserve has been sustained by never compromising the traditional standards of
production - Glenfiddich is the only Highland single malt to be distilled, matured and bottled
at its own distillery.
GLENFIDDICH 15 Year Old 'Solera Reserve' Bottle (75cl) £31.95
43.0%alc
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 93 POINTS - 'A marriage of citrus notes (especially oranges)
subtle spices and oak; honey leads the way with balancing spices and oak. The malt remains
fresh and refreshing; medium to long with soft sherry and gently building cocoa; this is one of
my regular drams, and the one I immediately display to people who rubbish Glenfiddich.'
GLENFIDDICH 18 Year Old Ancient Reserve Bottle (75cl) £43.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 92 POINTS - 'Blood oranges, apples, the most gentle of smoke
and oaky saltiness: delicate, complex and enormously sexy; those oranges are there again as
the malt melts in the mouth. Quite salty still but sherry and sultanas to fatten things up,
brown sugar sweetens things a little; a dry finale of medium length with unsweetened mocha:
clean, chewy and well-defined; another nail in the coffin of those who sniffilly insist that
Glenfiddich can't make good whisky.'
GLENMORANGIE 10 Year Old Single Malt Litre (100cl) £38.95
JIM MURRAY'S WHISKY BIBLE - 94 POINTS - 'Perhaps the most enigmatic aroma of them all:
delicate yet assertive, sweet yet dry, young yet oaky: a malty tone poem; flaky oakiness
throughout but there is an impossibly complex toastinessto the barley which seems to
suggest the lightest hint of smoke; amazingly long for such a light dram, drying from the
initial sweetness but with flaked almonds amid the oakier, rich cocoa notes; remains one of
the great single malts: a whisky of uncompromising aesthetic beauty from the first enigmatic
whiff to the last teasing and tantalising gulp. Complexity at its most complex.'
GLENMORANGIE 18 Year Old Bottle (70cl)
43.0%alc
£69.95
Glenmorangie 18 Years Old slips like silk over the tongue with a full, rounded flavour, starting
with grapefruit & orange. The palate is then entranced with an accord of melting honey,
creamy malt and aromatic florals that segue into the warm, syrupy nuttiness of hazelnuts and
walnuts from the Oloroso sherry casks in which the whisky is matured. Savour the rich, sticky
date and fig flavours as they are heightened by the unexpected caress of woodsmoke.
Lingering and enticing with the subtle sweetness of dried fruit and the nutty dryness of
sherry.
