Western Australia
MAD FISH Cabernet-Merlot 2008 Bottle/st
£8.95
The winery takes its name from Madfish Bay which can found near Denmark in Western
Australia's Great Southern and where, apparently, fish go loco. Designed to reflect WA's
laid-back lifestyle, both the packaging and the juice are right on the money. As you'd expect
from wines from the same stable as the mighty Howard Park they are classically cool-climate
in style with a real vibrancy of fruit and an abundance of cheeky charm.
Tasting: Deliciously well-balanced wine, with the dark fruits of the Cabernet blending
seamlessly with the more chocolatey characters of the Merlot.
MAD FISH Pinot Noir 2009 Bottle
£8.95
This wine has a wonderful brilliant crimson cherry hue. The nose has elegant and attractive
aromas of red cherry, strawberry and earth. The palate is also reminiscent of strawberry but
tends towards black rather than red cherry and slightly tart plums. The palate also exhibits
forest floor characters and a firm yet subtle backbone of tannin. These tannins are palate
covering and elegant and finish wonderfully with a slight acid twang. This wine is perfect for
immediate consumption for those who enjoy a luxurious and fruit driven style. Those who
have patience to cellar will be rewarded with a more elegant and restrained wine showing
more earthy and leathery characters after about four years.
HAMELIN BAY Shiraz/Cabernet/Merlot 'Rampant Red' 2007 £10.95
Bottle
This juicy red wine lives up to its name, a rampant red! Beautiful clarity with a pinkish/purple
colour in the glass, and almost leafy aromas of dusty mint, cherries, plums and berries. A
mouth-filling juicy red worth savouring. The winery at Hamelin Bay in the south of the region
is just a few miles from the ocean. With 63 acres of well drained gravel soils, the `Five Ashes
Vineyard` faces north to grab some sunny rays in this cool region. The intensely fruity wines
have a natural richness reflecting the unique beauty of the area and in recent years the
Drake-Brockman family who own the winery have enjoyed high praise for their range of
stunning wines.
Chile
Casablanca
INDOMITA Pinot Noir 'Nostros' 2010/11* Bottle
£5.95
A light, fragrant red made from grapes grown in the cooler Casablanca region of Chile. Bright,
wild strawberry and raspberry fruits dominate a soft, supple palate which leads through to a
gentle, warming finish. Perched high on a hill above the plains of the Casablanca Valley, Vina
Indomita looks more Roman temple than winery but love-it-or-hate-it, it is not a building you
are going to miss! Sourcing fruit from both the Casablanca and Maipo regions, they have the
benefit of having the best climate for both whites and reds and produce superb, expressive
wines that are both beautiful and stunning value for money.
Central Valley
CALBUCO Merlot 2010 Bottle
£6.75
From the Central Valley in Chile the vineyards are located on a strip of land between the
Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Here the grapes are helped by cold nights and hot days and the
influence of the Pacific. Perfumed nose of blackcurrants and tobacco leaf. The palate is of
juicy ripe brambly fruits with plums giving a soft, ripe, rounded wine with a lovely juicy finish.
FINCA EL PICADOR Merlot 2011 Bottle
£4.95
100% Merlot grapes grown in non-grafted vineyards. Medium bodied, with lovely sweet plum
fruit and a mellow, soothing finish.
PALENA Merlot by Valdivieso 2010 Bottle
Attractive dark red colour, aromas and flavours of ripe plums & blackberries, sweet spices,
coffee and chocolate with delicate smokey notes. A soft medium bodied wine with good
length and structure.
Maipo Valley
ALMAVIVA Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Bottle
£5.95
£69.95
Almaviva was established in 1996 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. With the steady hand of
Patrick Leon (winemaker at Mouton and Opus One), the results have been nothing short of
spectacular. The old world savoir faire has been put to good use to tame the exuberance of
the ripe Cabernet Sauvignon which dominates the wine. The 2007 is particularly successful;
notes of cassis plum and damson, held in check by gravely tannins and a sophisticated
structure which could come straight from one of the better properties in Pauillac. (Simon
Field MW - BBR Buyer)
CHOCALAN Syrah 'Reserve' 2009/10 Bottle
£9.95
This wine has a dark purple colour, and explosive blackberry and blueberry aromas on the
nose, with a hint of violet framed by intense spicy and toasty notes. On the palate it is
well-balanced and fresh, with velvety tannins accompanying the black fruits on the long finish.
Perfect with lamb.
Beaujolais-Villages
ANDRE COLONGE Beaujolais-Villages 2009/10* Bottle
£8.25
With such intensity of wild strawberries, it would be impossible to confuse this fresh,
perfumed wine with much of the second-rate Beaujolais that is sadly still widely available. The
quality-focused producers however, of whom Colonge is certainly one, are gradually shifting
the 1980s enthusiasm for Beaujolais Nouveau towards the higher-quality village wines.'
Brouilly
CHATEAU DES PIERREUX Brouilly 'Reserve' 2009/10* Bottle
£11.95
This 'Reserve du Chateau', a selection from the estate's oldest vines and best vineyard (the La
Roche vineyard), is aged in used barrels (from Domaine de la Vougeraie) for about eight
months prior to bottling. It is an altogether more serious wine, illustrating the heights that
the Gamay grape can scale, given proper care and attention.
This Brouilly is bright, deep purple in colour, with a forward, open nose offering perfumes of
raspberries and strawberries, characteristic of good Gamay. It has good depth of flavour on
the palate, with enough structure to balance the wealth of ripe, cherryish fruit.
CHATEAU DES TOURS Brouilly 2009/10*** Bottle
£11.45
Think of Beaujolais ... then think again, and consider the cru Beaujolais, the product of 10
villages whose wines are considered so exceptional that they carry the village name. The cru
villages are Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon,
Moulin-a-Vent, Saint-Amour, and the most recent designee, Régnié. Château des Tours has
50 hectares of vines all planted facing south within the appellation of Brouilly. There is a high
proportion of old vines and the wine is vinified in the traditional Beaujolais manner Château
des Tours has been making wine from the same vineyards since 1153 AD. The Brouilly of
Château des Tours has a delightful intense purple-mauve colour with a bouquet of violets and
raspberries. On the palate it is lively, rich, balanced, and tender with an immediate appeal.
Fleurie
CAVE DE FLEURIE Fleurie 2010 Bottle
£9.95
Wine Maker Richard Lamarre makes this from 100% Gamay grapes. The wine has a striking and
vivid red colour, with several punnets worth of red berry fruit on the nose and palate.
Soft and fresh with light, ripe tannins and crisp acidity it is a benchmark Bojo. Press Quote
"Every summer selection needs an easy-glugging red that works well chilled or at room
temperature, with or without food, and this is my suggestion. This is the first year that the
Fleurie co-op, have screwcapped this wine, and it has never tasted better. Bravo to one and all
for this rich, plummy, floral beaujolais with lots of lively, appley fruit on the finish." Jane
MacQuitty,The Times
J.L. DUTRAIVE Fleurie 'Chapelle des Bois' 2009 Bottle (DIS)
£13.95
A family property of 10.7 hectares belonging to the family DUTRAIVE. The domaine of the
Grand'Cour produces wines coming from the Gamay grape under 2 names: FLEURIE (9.1
hectares) and BROUILLY (1.6 hectares). In traditional culture, without chemical fertilizer or
weedkiller, with little or no filtration, their wines express the earth and the work of the
winegrower. Certified Domain in entirety to biological farming since 2009. This wine is very
feminine, fresh and packed with finesse. Concentrated yet approachable. We are delighted to
have this wine here at Dunell's and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do!
MICHEL CHIGNARD Fleurie 'Les Moriers' 2009 Bottle
£12.95
From the top producer in Fleurie , Michel seems to be able to make the most fantastic wine
year after year. Dominated by red berry fruit aromas that follow through to the palate where
they are mixed with strawberries and soft burnt fruit flavours. This wine has immediate
appeal and would accompany a wide variety of dishes.
Morgon
DOMAINE DE LA CHAPONNE Morgon 2008/09 Bottle
£10.45
Tremendous stuff from Laurent Guillet, a keen young grower with superbly situated vines.
Very fragrant, packed with bright soft cherry fruit that drinks well young or equally matures
impressively in the medium term.
