Barolo
MASSOLINO Barolo 'Serralunga d'Alba' 2006/7 Bottle/NC
£35.95
“This is a superb set of 2006 Barolos from Massolino. The wines show a combination of power
and elegance that in some ways recalls 1996. These 2006s will require time, but the
investment will be well worth it. Massolino remains very much in the traditional camp. If
anything, an increase in the use of cement (especially for the malos) and a greater reliance on
large oak for the Barolo Parafada signal a move towards more classicism in the wines. These
exceptionally pure, elegant Barolos merit special consideration. I am a big fan of Massolino
and often purchase the wines for my own cellar.” Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker's Wine
Advocate, Feb 2010
Representing a fantastic price to value ratio, this wine is age worthy and made with an
absolute level of finite controls from the vineyard to the bottle. Although quite young, this
Barolo shows like many Barolo twice the price.
PRUNOTTO Barolo Classico 'Famiglia Antinori 2005/06/07* £29.95
Bottle/NC
From vineyards in the areas of Monforte, Serralunga and Castiglion Falletto. Origins go back
to the Tortonian - Messinian era. Rich in calcareous clay and in magnesium and manganese
elements. Garnet in colour and on the nose, wide and complex with hints of violet and forest
fruit aromas. On the palate, full and velvety and well balanced. Due to its structure and
characteristics, it is a perfect match for meat and game dishes, and tasty cheeses. Ideal
serving temperature 17°C
RIVA LEONE Barolo 2007/10 Bottle
£15.95
Many view the red wines from Barolo as Italy's best-so much so that they're sometimes called
the 'King' of Italian wines. The Barolo DOCG area lies just southwest of Alba and includes the
vineyards on the steep hills around the towns of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga
d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba, and La Morra.
Rich full-bodied but elegant and complex with earthy, truffly and chocolaty notes and a hint
of violets. The perfect companion to a variety of flavourful and strong dishes.
ROBERTO VOERZIO Barolo 'Vigento La Serra' 1999 Bottle
£109.95
ROBERT PARKER 95 points 'The 1999 Barolo La Serra has always been a magnificent wine as it
is again tonight. I have often felt this Barolo and Voerzio’s other 1999s, signal the first move
towards a more elegant and finessed style. Sweet, floral aromatics meld into vibrant layers of
mineral-infused dark cherries as the wine opens up in the glass. This young, sweeping Barolo is
simply magnificent and one of the very finest La Serras Voerzio has made over the course of
his career. Though delicious today, the wine promises to drink beautifully for another 15-20
years. It is superb. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.'
Colli Tortonesi
TACCHINO Barbera del Monferrato 2008/09/10 Bottle
£9.45
For more than three generations the Tacchino family has produced superb fresh and modern
wines in Castelletto d'Orba in Monferrato, Piedmont. This is perfect wine country, where the
hills of Monterrato provide a natural amphitheatre which protects the vineyards from the
northerly winds and allows maximum ripeness. The wines are all made without the use of oak
to retain freshness and allow maximum expression of the fruit. This results in wines with
great purity. The Barbera del Monferrato has deep, velvety red fruit flavours with spicy notes.
Langhe
ANGELO GAJA Langhe 'Conteisa' Nebbiolo 2007 Bottle
£129.50
Acknowledged world wide as the greatest producer of Nebbiolo, Angelo has again created
spectacular wines from the Langhe district of Barolo. Opulent and elegant with masses of
dark fruit and layers of spice, these wines are appealing even now but they will richly reward
some patience.
95 points, Antonio Galloni, erobertparker.com - "The 2007 Langhe Conteisa is impeccably ripe
and silky on the palate, with expressive La Morra red fruits, flowers, mint and spices that
emerge from the glass. This is another soft, seamless wine from Gaja, with gorgeous purity in
the fruit that carries through all the way to the deeply satisfying, creamy finish. The tannins
remain impeccably refined and beautifully balanced with the fruit. The wine is likely to firm up
a touch in bottle, but it should be one of the most accessible of Gaja's 2007s. The 2007 is easily
among the finest Conteisas ever made. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027."
ANGELO GAJA Langhe 'Sperss' Nebbiolo 2007 Bottle
£159.50
Acknowledged world wide as the greatest producer of Nebbiolo, Angelo has again created
spectacular wines from the Langhe district of Barolo. Opulent and elegant with masses of
dark fruit and layers of spice, these wines are appealing even now but they will richly reward
some patience.
97 points, Antonio Gallon - "The 2007 Langhe Sperss is beyond impeccable in the way it
combines a powerful expression of Serralunga fruit in a round, enveloping style. Make no
mistake about it, there is plenty of intensity and muscle here, but in 2007 Sperss is
exceptionally harmonious from the start. The fruit is decidedly darker than the red-toned
Conteisa, while an array of licorice, smoke and iron - all typical of Serralunga - add further
gravitas. Even as the tannins build on the close, here, too, the finish is utterly sublime. It will
test readers' patience but it is simply magnificent even today. Anticipated maturity:
2022-2047."
Bolgheri
ANTINORI Cabernet/Merlot 'Il Bruciato' Guado al Tasso 2008 £17.95
Bottle
Rich in colour and very structured but soft on the palate, without any astringency. The wine
was then transferred to new French oak barriques (Troncais and Alliers) where it was racked
for blending with different varieties then replaced in barriques for about 8 months, after
which it was bottled and aged for 16 months before being released.
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Syrah with some other black grape
varieties it is showing a good, intense ruby red colour. Very fruity aromas of red berries with
hints of oak are showing in this well structured and lengthy wine, to produce a well-balanced
wine with soft tannins and a smooth finish.
ANTINORI Guado al Tasso 2007 Bottle/NC
£59.95
THE WINE ADVOCATE Robert Parker 94 points
'The 2007 Guado al Tasso screams of Bolgheri. Sweet grilled herbs, mocha, spices and black
cherry jam are woven into a generous, expansive frame. There is a wonderful sense of
richness and warmth to the fruit that carries through to the round harmonious finish, where
clean, minerally notes add freshness. This is simply gorgeous today, but it is young, and the
oak needs to integrate. Still, it is impossible not to admire the 2007 Guado al Tasso. In 2007
Guado al Tasso is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The late
ripening Cabernet Franc, used in place of Syrah for the first time in 2007, adds a measure of
freshness that had often been missing in previous vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.'
TENUTA DELL'ORNELLAIA Ornellaia 2007 Bottle
£129.95
ROBERT PARKER 93 points
The 2007 Ornellaia is remarkably open and accessible, very much in keeping with the
personality of the vintage. Clean, minerally notes frame a core of silky, perfumed dark fruit,
mocha, spices, licorice, grilled herbs and leather that impresses for its exceptional length.
Tasted next to the 2007 Le Serre Nuove, the 2007 Ornellaia shows more muscle (from the
higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon), but in terms of pure quality the wines are very
close. The 2007 is not a big, massive Ornellaia, but rather a wine built on elegance and finesse,
both of which are on full display. The 2007 should drink well with a minimum of cellaring, but
whether it will make old bones remains a question mark at this point. The 2007 Ornellaia is
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Anticipated
maturity: 2012-2022.
Chianti
ANTINORI Chianti Classico 'Peppoli' 2007/08 Bottle/NC
£14.95
Introduced in 1988 with the 1985 vintage, Peppoli Chianti Classico DOCG is the archetypal
modern Chianti Classico. In a departure from traditional Chiantis, Peppoli combines the
complexity and structure of a well-aged riserva with the fruity fragrance of a young wine.
Made from 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot and Syrah grapes it has intense red fruit aromas
with light hints of vanilla and coffee. A well-structured wine with smooth, sweet tannins of
nice length with fruity flavors. This wine is made to be enjoyed fairly young, while the fruit is
at its fullest expression.
ANTINORI Chianti Classico Reserva 'Marchese Antinori' 2006 £17.95
Bottle
Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Reserva is produced, exclusively from the finest, most
highly selected grapes grown on the Antinori Santa Cristina, Pèppoli and Badia a Passignano
estates in the Mercatale Val di Pesa zone in Chianti Classico. Deep ruby red with light garnet
hues, it has pronounced cherry and violet fruit with tobacco nuances on the nose. It is a
full-bodied and rounded red wine of remarkable depth, structure and length. 90% Sangiovese,
10% Cabernet Sauvignon and other complementary red varieties.
ANTINORI Solaia 2003/04 Bottle
£179.95
Solaia, which means the 'sunny one' in Italian, is a 10 hectares (25 acres) southwest-facing
vineyard planted 351-396 metres (1,150-1,300 feet) above sea-level on stony calcareous soil of
marl and friable albarese rock. It is located at Santa Cristina, alongside the Tignanello
vineyard, which is on the same property, in the Mercatale Val di Pesa zone of Chianti Classico.
ROBERT PARKER 93 points (2007) '...reveals the essence of blackberry jam, licorice, cassis, tar
and minerals in a super-ripe, heady expression of the vintage. Richly sumptuous on the palate,
this beautiful, expansive Solaia offers terrific length as well as stunning balance with plenty of
style. It is sure to deliver much gratification over the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity:
2008-2018.'
CANTINE LEONARDO Chianti 2010 Bottle
The wine has a clear, ruby-red colour, with reasonable depth and 'legs' indicating good
£7.95
structure. Aromas of cherries and fresh red fruit mingle with spicy, peppery notes. The wine is
lively and fresh in the mouth, with soft, rounded tannins. Good intensity, attractive structure
and fine, long length. Delicious with almost all kinds of starters and light meat dishes.
DA VINCI Chianti 2009/10 Bottle
£8.95
Ah, chianti…that unassuming pizza and pasta standard best drunk from an old fashioned
glass. Well, break out the Riedel, because Da Vinci elevates the light and lively varietal to an
impressive level of sophistication. Smells so good — berries and plums and spice. It’s a study
in contrasts, too. Deep, dark red color…but light legs. Medium bodied…but chewy tannins
and a dry, leathery finish. Lush with strawberry and bittersweet chocolate flavors.
Surprisingly luscious and balanced. A Renaissance masterpiece!
