Tips for Field Workers
How to start On-farm activities?
To support agriculture based (on-farm) income generation activities,
field worker should begin by:
Focusing on women who have land or can get involved in
such activities;
Collecting information on their possible activities and
training related needs;
local resource persons and training institutions for
organising training programmes according to above needs
and to provide subsequent guidance to the trainees;
Organising training, demonstrations and exposure visits
to useful institutions, places and model farmers; and
Planning use of community assets funds for some of the
support activities mentioned in this chapter.
It is expected that by the end of second year of the SHG, field
workers will organize on-farm training, exposure visits and
demonstrations for at least one- third of the SHG members and
due to this, there will be visible increase in their income.
such earnings can only supplement the family income; they
cannot become the main source of their livelihood. During
the first cycle, not much assistance is required from the field
worker. She can assist the member only in applying for
proper size of loan and some basic training in costing and
quality improvement.
Second Cycle
The field worker would have to ensure certain inputs in
terms of skill–building for SHG members to help them
enter the second cycle of investment leading to
enterprise growth and sustenance. Skill
building needs to be in the area of managing
an enterprise – costing, business planning,
market study, value addition, etc. Questions
such as:
