NGOs and field staff agree that small research studies
need to be undertaken to find out more about tribal
culture so that project activities can be effectively located
within it. Some subjects on which research studies could
be initiated are suggested below:
The use of traditional medicines in the community,
its availability, effectiveness and potential for
collection and marketing as an income generation
activity;
The presence of art forms in the community, their
relevance and how they could be incorporated to
target messages; and
Different types of income generating activities that
could be linked to the tribals’ day-to-day living, their
feasibility in a given context. For example, if Tendu
leaves are available, would leaf collection be a viable
micro-enterprise?
The development of a tribal area activity plan is one of the
important areas of focus within the Project. It is essential,
therefore, to
Review the feasibility of the strategy;
Develop a tribal status paper on the work so far done
and the groups formed while incorporating NGO
experiences;
Identify tasks for the Consultant and commission small
research studies. This would be more useful than
formulating a revised strategy; and
Suggest a list of consultants to undertake the studies.
