Tips for Field Workers
These six factors for sustainability are
discussed in detail below:
1. Stability of the group’s internal
practices
A fully developed group should be
capable of handling issues related to:
The leadership of the group;
Taking decisions regarding group
matters, both financial and nonfinancial;
Problem solving and conflict resolution in the group;
Maintenance of accounts; and
Establishing and maintaining linkages with banks,
government agencies, NGOs, etc.
Individual members should be able to:
increase their income by expanding existing income
generating activities or initiating new ones;
become more influential in taking decisions regarding
their family’s economic matters;
gain self-respect and dignity in their families and the
community; and
develop the confidence to interact with outsiders.
2. Improved financial viability of the group
The group must be able to pay for the following from its
own income:
Cost of stationery, books and records;
Conveyance of its members when they go on group
work;
Cost of postage;
Interest payable on loans from the bank or revolving
fund;
Loans that have defaulted;
Cost of its other activities;
Partial cost of training programmes and demonstration
camps organized at the village or at cluster level; and
Membership charges of cluster association.
