Outdoor Pursuits<br />

Miss H Jenkins<br />

Pupils in Year 8 under<strong>to</strong>ok a 6 week Paddleower<br />

course (Levels 1—5)from the 14th September<br />

<strong>to</strong> 19th Oc<strong>to</strong>berat Cardiff International<br />

White Water Centre. They learned<br />

about water safety and their own paddling<br />

skills in a range <strong>of</strong> different craft including<br />

the canoe, kayak and bell boats.<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> Year 11 and 12 pupils went from<br />

20th Oc<strong>to</strong>ber <strong>to</strong> 3rd November on a visit <strong>to</strong><br />

Morocco.<br />

leader for the day which involved managing<br />

the budget and making decisions on activities<br />

and arrangements for the day. The community<br />

project in Asni gave the pupils an insight in<strong>to</strong> a<br />

different culture from ours and the limited resources<br />

in some <strong>of</strong> the villages. The pupils also<br />

had a greater understanding <strong>of</strong> their own<br />

strengths and were able <strong>to</strong> successfully reflect<br />

on their own personal development at the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the trip. The next overseas adventure is due<br />

<strong>to</strong> take place in July 2014 <strong>to</strong> Norway.<br />

A further group <strong>of</strong> Year 8 pupils have been at<br />

the Cardiff International White Water Centre<br />

from 17th May—12th July. They have either<br />

been able <strong>to</strong> try canoeing and kayaking for the<br />

first time and 14 further pupils have undertaken<br />

the Paddle power (Level 1—5 course).<br />

They have received certification <strong>of</strong> their water<br />

safety and get further certification when they<br />

successfully complete the 6 week paddle<br />

course.<br />

The overseas expedition involved a 4 day<br />

trek in the Toubkal region <strong>of</strong> the North Atlas<br />

mountains, followed by some community<br />

and environmental project work in Asni.<br />

They completed their adventure with a relaxation<br />

day in the coastal <strong>to</strong>wn <strong>of</strong> Essaouira<br />

and a final day in Marrakech. On the trip,<br />

each <strong>of</strong> the students <strong>to</strong>ok turns <strong>to</strong> be the<br />

7 <strong>to</strong> Llangrannog in September for a team<br />

building 3 days through the medium <strong>of</strong> the outdoor<br />

pursuits with plenty <strong>of</strong> Welsh language<br />

practice thrown in for good measure!<br />
