It has been a successful year in the<br />

Mathematics department. Years 11, 12<br />

and 13 have taken their GCSE, AS and A<br />

Level examinations respectively. We say<br />

goodbye and good luck <strong>to</strong> our Year 13<br />

students and look forward <strong>to</strong> welcoming back<br />

some Year 11 pupils for AS Maths and Further<br />

Maths in September.<br />

Year 10 have now nearly finished the GCSE<br />

Maths course. They will be concentrating on<br />

revision techniques and practising past papers<br />

as preparation for their GCSE exam in<br />

November. A weekly homework club will<br />

run from September and will be open <strong>to</strong> all<br />

pupils.<br />

Following on from recent success, a team <strong>of</strong><br />

Year 8 and 9 pupils was entered in<strong>to</strong> the<br />

prestigious UKMT team challenge. The team<br />

consisted <strong>of</strong> Daniel Grosfils and Seren<br />

Marsh (Year 9), Daniel Ander<strong>to</strong>n and Benjamin<br />

Roderick (Year 8). The team finished<br />

in 6th place out <strong>of</strong> 24 teams. They all thoroughly<br />

enjoyed the challenge and competing<br />

against schools from across the UK.<br />

achieved the best score in the school and qualified<br />

for the IMOK Maclaurin round <strong>of</strong> the<br />

competition. Following his excellent performance<br />

in the competition, Balaji was invited <strong>to</strong><br />

attend the National Mathematics Summer<br />

<strong>School</strong>. Huge congratulations go <strong>to</strong> Suzie<br />

Collins, Adam Jones, Ta<strong>to</strong> Katsikeas, Balaji<br />

Krishna, Rebecca Te Water Naude, Leo<br />

Tucker, Robert Tur<strong>to</strong>n and Elis Vandyck<br />

(all Year 11) who achieved gold certificates in<br />

the competition. Also, well done <strong>to</strong> Jack<br />

Bosley who achieved the best score in Year 10<br />

and Daniel Grosfils who achieved the best<br />

score in Year 9.<br />

In April, the <strong>to</strong>p sets from Years 7 and 8 <strong>to</strong>ok<br />

part in the National UKMT Maths challenge at<br />

Junior level. Congratulations <strong>to</strong> Year 8’s Benjamin<br />

Roderick, who achieved the best score<br />

in the school and a gold certificate. Other gold<br />

certificate winners were Annie Higgins, Dylan<br />

Hughes, Elin Gray (Year 8), Felicity Allen,<br />

Ben Evans, Phoebe Skel<strong>to</strong>n, Andrew Te<br />

Water Naude, Evan Warbur<strong>to</strong>n and Hannah<br />

Ross (Year 7).<br />

Well done <strong>to</strong> all the pupils that <strong>to</strong>ok part in the<br />

UKMT Maths challenges, in particular those<br />

that achieved a gold, silver or bronze medal.<br />

Key Stage 3 Maths Homework Club continued<br />

<strong>this</strong> year with games, numeracy activities, help<br />

with homework and revision tips. We have had<br />

several regulars, including Saumik Dhar and<br />

Joseph Hobbs.<br />

In February, the <strong>to</strong>p sets from Years 9, 10 &<br />

11 <strong>to</strong>ok part in the National UKMT Maths<br />

challenge at Intermediate level. Congratulations<br />

<strong>to</strong> Year 11’s Balaji Krishna, who<br />

Finally, a big thank you <strong>to</strong> the Year 12 and 13<br />

pupils who complete their community service<br />

with the Maths department. Whether it’s helping<br />

in Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4 Homework<br />

Clubs or assisting within Maths lessons, their<br />

time and efforts are greatly appreciated.<br />
