Year 9<br />

There have been many exciting and interesting<br />

events taking place for Year 9 <strong>this</strong> year. Pupils<br />

have begun their GCSE courses in all subjects<br />

with great enthusiasm and have coped well with<br />

the challenge <strong>this</strong> has presented. There was considerable<br />

interest in applying for courses at Cardiff<br />

& Vale College and Military Prep College<br />

next year. All pupils performed very well in their<br />

interviews and thoroughly enjoyed the taster sessions<br />

at the college. In March <strong>this</strong> year pupils<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok advantage <strong>of</strong> a careers fair at Howells<br />

school. The pupils were excellent and they <strong>to</strong>ok<br />

full advantage <strong>to</strong> speak with a wide range <strong>of</strong> employers<br />

and representatives from the Welsh Universities.<br />

Year 9 students have had many memorable and<br />

inspiring visi<strong>to</strong>rs during the term.<br />

Taking Flight Theatre Company performed a<br />

theatre piece over two days <strong>to</strong> Year 9 pupils in<br />

February. It helped <strong>to</strong> educate the pupils about<br />

the impact <strong>of</strong> Disability Hate Crime on the lives<br />

<strong>of</strong> disabled people. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed<br />

the performance and workshops, in particular<br />

the performance by Cara Readle (an actress<br />

from Tracy Beaker). Many relevant issues<br />

affecting children in their everyday lives were<br />

covered. Pupils had a chance <strong>to</strong> explore the issues<br />

<strong>of</strong> Body Confidence and Self-Esteem.<br />

In January, ‘Everyone’s Future’ started a rota <strong>of</strong><br />

workshops at <strong>Stanwell</strong>. The workshops highlighted<br />

issues <strong>of</strong> age discrimination and the<br />

negative stereotyping <strong>of</strong> older and younger people.<br />

Pupils received valuable business advice from<br />

guest speakers in the recent Dynamo Project.<br />

The Pro<strong>to</strong> Toy Day was a success with some interesting<br />

and innovative designs being shown. It<br />

appears there are some budding entrepreneurs in<br />

Year 9!<br />

100 pupils participated in a reward trip <strong>to</strong><br />

the West Midland Safari Park after receiving<br />

the most housepoints in Year 9.<br />

Several members <strong>of</strong> the year group have<br />

been involved in the excellent Year 8/9 joint<br />

production <strong>of</strong> ‘Oliver’.<br />

9T<br />

Rhys Jones won player <strong>of</strong> the year for his<br />

rugby team Cricc (a Cardiff team). Benjamin<br />

Stewart won his first boxing fight in<br />

Cogan for Penarth ABC. David Warner<br />

plays for the school football team and<br />

reached the semi-finals. David also won the<br />

finals for Cogan A football team. Seren<br />

Marsh received the Middle Sports girl<br />

award at the recent Awards Ceremony.<br />

Seren also sat her grade 5 piano theory<br />

exam and is awaiting results. She also won<br />

the Under 15 badmin<strong>to</strong>n competition and is<br />

now Welsh Champion, as well as reaching<br />

the quarter finals <strong>of</strong> the British <strong>School</strong> Tennis<br />

Championships. Matthew Dawson represented<br />

Cardiff & the Vale for cross country.<br />

He also reached the semi finals with the<br />

school football team as well as representing<br />

the school in rugby. Matthew reached the<br />

finals for the Blues cup for Penarth Rugby<br />

& currently plays football for Sully. Ella<br />

Buehner Gattis achieved her piano grade 6.<br />

She also came second in the Go4Set competition<br />

for Engineering for her design <strong>of</strong> a<br />

sports centre. Ella also came second in a<br />

sailing race for CYRC. She also played the<br />

double bass for the orchestra for the school<br />
