Year 9

There have been many exciting and interesting
events taking place for Year 9 this year. Pupils
have begun their GCSE courses in all subjects
with great enthusiasm and have coped well with
the challenge this has presented. There was considerable
interest in applying for courses at Cardiff
& Vale College and Military Prep College
next year. All pupils performed very well in their
interviews and thoroughly enjoyed the taster sessions
at the college. In March this year pupils
took advantage of a careers fair at Howells
school. The pupils were excellent and they took
full advantage to speak with a wide range of employers
and representatives from the Welsh Universities.
Year 9 students have had many memorable and
inspiring visitors during the term.
Taking Flight Theatre Company performed a
theatre piece over two days to Year 9 pupils in
February. It helped to educate the pupils about
the impact of Disability Hate Crime on the lives
of disabled people. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed
the performance and workshops, in particular
the performance by Cara Readle (an actress
from Tracy Beaker). Many relevant issues
affecting children in their everyday lives were
covered. Pupils had a chance to explore the issues
of Body Confidence and Self-Esteem.
In January, ‘Everyone’s Future’ started a rota of
workshops at Stanwell. The workshops highlighted
issues of age discrimination and the
negative stereotyping of older and younger people.
Pupils received valuable business advice from
guest speakers in the recent Dynamo Project.
The Proto Toy Day was a success with some interesting
and innovative designs being shown. It
appears there are some budding entrepreneurs in
Year 9!
100 pupils participated in a reward trip to
the West Midland Safari Park after receiving
the most housepoints in Year 9.
Several members of the year group have
been involved in the excellent Year 8/9 joint
production of ‘Oliver’.

Rhys Jones won player of the year for his
rugby team Cricc (a Cardiff team). Benjamin
Stewart won his first boxing fight in
Cogan for Penarth ABC. David Warner
plays for the school football team and
reached the semi-finals. David also won the
finals for Cogan A football team. Seren
Marsh received the Middle Sports girl
award at the recent Awards Ceremony.
Seren also sat her grade 5 piano theory
exam and is awaiting results. She also won
the Under 15 badminton competition and is
now Welsh Champion, as well as reaching
the quarter finals of the British School Tennis
Championships. Matthew Dawson represented
Cardiff & the Vale for cross country.
He also reached the semi finals with the
school football team as well as representing
the school in rugby. Matthew reached the
finals for the Blues cup for Penarth Rugby
& currently plays football for Sully. Ella
Buehner Gattis achieved her piano grade 6.
She also came second in the Go4Set competition
for Engineering for her design of a
sports centre. Ella also came second in a
sailing race for CYRC. She also played the
double bass for the orchestra for the school
