Details on the project: The role of surface instabilities in the mass-transport of
reactive gases under external irradiation.
The use of low energy, high current density nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen ion beams is a
new processing method for producing at moderate temperature thick modified layers
with a high nitrogen or carbon or oxygen content. The objectives of this research
Integrated Project are twofold:
• To investigate experimentally the process of low energy/high flux nitrogen, carbon,
oxygen ions implantation at moderate temperatures of stainless steel and to
understand the mechanism leading to the formation of the thick alloyed layers with
high nitrogen or carbon or oxygen content (up to 20 %) using Nanotechnologies.
• To develop a model taking into account the physical effects induced by the ions in
the first layers. This includes the formation of a considerable number of defects,
cascade mixing, sputtering and atom relocation on the surface. The allocation is
calculated by computers simulations that estimate the depth profiles of nitrogen or
carbon or oxygen implanted atoms.
