functional characterisation in the nervous system of a new
family of membrane-bound intracellular receptor proteins for
kinesins.
• The investigation of the role of motor proteins in human
neurodegenerative disease. The aim is to contribute to the
understanding of motor neurone disease, the elucidation of
the molecular mechanism that leads to cell death, the
identification of putative therapeutic targets and the design of
patient molecular diagnostics.

In the framework of these three projects, the laboratory has
respective collaborations with the University of Dundee, the
Hellenic National Research Institute, the University of
Singapore, and the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics
and an EU-funded network (7 laboratories in 5 European
countries). This network includes the EMBL (Germany), the
DKFZ (Germany), the DESY (Germany), and the University of
Milano (Italy), the University of Crete (Greece) and the
Biotechnology Company Diverdrugs (Spain).
• Identification and functional characterisation of kinesin-like
motors that are expressed in the developing mammalian
nervous system.
• Identification and characterisation of a new family of
membrane-bound intracellular receptor proteins for kinesins,
the kinectin-superfamily.
• Investigating the role of kinesin-like proteins in human
neurodegenerative disease.
Investigation of the Coiled Body by the identification and
functional characterisation of Colin-interacting proteins.
