The spa shell is basically <strong>the</strong> moulded interior that contains <strong>the</strong> seating. The<br />

frame <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spa supports <strong>the</strong> spa shell and is generally made <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r treated<br />

timber, metal or syn<strong>the</strong>tic struts. It is important for <strong>the</strong> long-term integrity <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> spa structure.<br />

The spa cabinet is <strong>the</strong> outer cladding that protects <strong>the</strong> inside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> spa from<br />

<strong>the</strong> elements and provides <strong>the</strong> aes<strong>the</strong>tic finish to <strong>the</strong> area below <strong>the</strong> shell.<br />

Cabinets are most commonly made from timber such as cedar or teak, or<br />

syn<strong>the</strong>tic materials which replicate <strong>the</strong> look <strong>of</strong> wood.<br />

Spas are supplied with an insulated hard cover that is filled with ei<strong>the</strong>r high<br />

density foam or polystyrene. This is <strong>the</strong>n wrapped in a sealed waterpro<strong>of</strong><br />

plastic and <strong>the</strong> final covering is made <strong>of</strong> vinyl on <strong>the</strong> outside to protect <strong>the</strong><br />

cover from <strong>the</strong> elements. The purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cover is to keep debris out <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> water, to keep <strong>the</strong> spa safe by preventing unauthorised access, and to<br />

insulate <strong>the</strong> top area <strong>of</strong> he spa against heat loss. Most spa covers range from<br />

2” (5cm) to 4” (10cm) in thickness.<br />

The pumps in <strong>the</strong> spa provide 3 main functions:<br />

• To pump <strong>the</strong> water through <strong>the</strong> plumbing system to <strong>the</strong> jets which will<br />

convert <strong>the</strong> flow into a massaging action.<br />

• To pump water through <strong>the</strong> heater to run heat cycles.<br />

• To pump <strong>the</strong> water through <strong>the</strong> spa filters to run clean up cycles.<br />
