Of the total CHF 13.1 billion spent on research and development in 2004, 70 % was financed by the private sector. The pharmaceutical industry had the highest expenditure at CHF 3.6 billion. The combined R&D expenses of all universities and research institutes amounted to CHF 3 billion in 2004. Some 52,000 people are involved in research, and 33,000 of these are in private industry. The private sector and the scientific community work closely together. Each institute at the university and college level has a coordination office for cooperation with the private sector. The CTI Innovation Promotion Agency can make significant financial contributions to research and development projects in which companies cooperate with non-profit research organizations.
