Chapter Eight Planning Support for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
What we do
Province-wide expert support
Our Centre offers support for parents, therapists and school personnel.
Many children travel to Fredericton for services such as in-depth team
assessment, therapeutic program review, spasticity management, or
swallowing evaluation. Services may include short stays from a few
days to several weeks in duration, during which children receive daily
therapy. We also do outreach clinics to communities around the
province.
How visits work
Before a visit, we consult with caregivers and professionals about their
goals and priorities. During the visit, members of the team work
together, focusing on those areas which have been identified as the
most important. Whenever possible, local therapists and school
personnel are present for part of the visit. At the end of the visit, a
verbal summary is given, followed by a written report describing our
impressions and recommendations. The team report is sent to everyone
designated by the child’s parents.
We also provide treatment or training materials such as photos,
handouts, and possibly a videotape of the session(s). During our work
with a child we often provide hands-on training of caregivers or local
professionals.
How to refer
We accept referrals from therapists, schools, and caregivers, with a
signature from the child’s physician. Upon receiving a referral, the
Paediatric Team resource clerk sends out a detailed questionnaire to
the parent(s) or caregivers.
How to contact us
For information on how to refer, the status of your referral, or your
appointment, please contact our resource-scheduling clerk at 452-5230.
