Functional Skills: Brushing Teeth: Record of instruction sessions<br />
(This is a sample of a task analysis for brushing teeth designed for a 12-year-old boy <strong>with</strong> autism)<br />
<strong>Teaching</strong> instructions: Record prompts used for each task:<br />
PP = physical prompt, VP = verbal directive prompt, I = independent performance of step<br />
Reinforcement: social praise after each correctly performed step<br />

1. Get glass, toothbrush and toothpaste from cupboard<br />
2. Turn on cold water<br />
3. Pick up and wet toothbrush<br />
4. Unscrew cap of toothpaste<br />
5. Put toothpaste on brush<br />
6. Set tube on counter<br />
7. Brush upper back teeth in up and down motion 5 times<br />
8. Bush lower back teeth in up and down motion 5 times<br />
9. Brush upper and lower front teeth in up and down motion 5 times<br />
10. Put toothbrush down, and spit into sink<br />
11. Fill cup<br />
12. Sip water, do not swallow, swish and spit into sink<br />
13. Repeat step 12<br />
14. Put cup down<br />
15. Rinse brush<br />
16. Turn off water<br />
17. Screw cap back on toothbrush<br />
18. Put material away<br />
