to <strong>the</strong> east <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> west <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> earlier dolmens, <strong>and</strong> a full long<br />
mound was being created (Fig. 7).<br />
Multi-period construction<br />
in Britain<br />
From Britain, in particular from Wales <strong>and</strong><br />
Scotl<strong>and</strong>, excavations have revealed evidence<br />
<strong>of</strong> multi-period megalithic tombs<br />
from a larger number <strong>of</strong> sites. Such composite<br />
tombs are now established as<br />
being a widespread phenomenon, <strong>and</strong><br />
examples are known throughout <strong>the</strong><br />
British Isles (Smith & Lynch 1987: 31).<br />
Often a small round cairn with one relatively<br />
simple megalithic chamber comprises<br />
<strong>the</strong> primary monument. After a<br />
certain interval <strong>of</strong> time <strong>the</strong> monument<br />
was enlarged, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> original round<br />
barrow became incorporated in a long<br />
cairn, <strong>of</strong>ten with a distinct facade at <strong>the</strong><br />
opening <strong>of</strong> a chamber.<br />
This is <strong>the</strong> case at <strong>the</strong> megalithic tomb<br />
<strong>of</strong> Trefignath on <strong>the</strong> isle <strong>of</strong> Anglesey,<br />
North Wales, where <strong>the</strong> first phase consists<br />
