11. Introduction <strong>of</strong> Upgraded Model <strong>of</strong> Electronic Voting Machine<br />
In the year 2007 the Election Commission <strong>of</strong> India introduced the upgraded<br />
model <strong>of</strong> the Electronic Voting Machine and used it <strong>for</strong> the first time in the<br />
General Election to the Legislative Assembly <strong>of</strong> Manipur held in 2007. The<br />
appearance and features <strong>of</strong> the voting machines manufactured by both BEL,<br />
Bangalore and ECIL, Hyderabad are more or less the same except <strong>for</strong> a few<br />
additional features/modifications..<br />
11.1 Additional features -<br />

Numeric in Braille signage (1 to 16) has been provided on the Balloting<br />
Unit (BU) top cover on the right <strong>of</strong> the blue button <strong>for</strong> each contesting<br />
candidate <strong>for</strong> the convenience <strong>of</strong> the visually challenged (blind)<br />
persons.<br />

In the Display Panel, there is only one window now instead <strong>of</strong> two<br />
windows in the existing model.<br />
The Display Panel now displays the data on two rows <strong>of</strong> total twenty<br />
four characters (twelve characters in each row).<br />
The hood <strong>of</strong> the connector attached to the interconnecting cable, one<br />
end <strong>of</strong> which is permanently fixed to the Balloting Unit, has now been<br />
provided with different coloured spring clips on both sides - one<br />
BLACK and the other RED. One side <strong>of</strong> female socket in the rear<br />
compartment <strong>of</strong> the Control Unit is in RED colour <strong>for</strong> easy identification<br />
at the time <strong>of</strong> insertion <strong>of</strong> the connector into the female socket. The<br />
RED spring clip has to match with the RED side <strong>of</strong> the socket and the<br />
BLACK spring clip has to match with the BLACK side <strong>of</strong> the socket.<br />
The ‘RESULT I‘ button in the Result Section has been replaced with a<br />
new ‘RESULT’ button.<br />
The ‘RESULT II’ button in the Result Section has been removed and in<br />
its place a new button ‘PRINT’ has been provided. The upgraded<br />
model <strong>of</strong> the voting machine has been provided with the facility to print<br />
the result data. A special gadget is to be attached at data interface<br />
connector at the rear side <strong>of</strong> the Control Unit <strong>for</strong> printing. When the<br />
‘PRINT’ button is pressed, the Control Unit displays ‘PRINTING’. For<br />
printing result data, the result has to be seen at least once.<br />
The inner cover <strong>of</strong> the Result Section covering the ‘RESULT’ and<br />
‘PRINT’ buttons has been provided with a single window <strong>for</strong> inserting<br />
