In △PZS, SZ is the calculated zenith distance, z, i.e. the zenith distance of the Sun as it would have<br />

been measured by an observer at D <strong>and</strong> subsequently corrected in the usual way for refraction, etc.<br />

The arc SW, of course, is the observed zenith distance, z ⊙ , of the Sun.<br />

Then the intercept DV is given by<br />

DV = calculated zenith distance − observed zenith distance
