ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
A group of resource professionals led by Dr. Peter Tarr from the Southern Africa Institute for
Environment Assessment (SAIEA) was used to provide background information and help guide this
Environmental Threats and Opportunities Assessment (ETOA). Their efforts in coordinating the
appropriate meetings, organizing the field trips, and providing a background information report is much
appreciated. In addition, this assessment relied on the cooperation and goodwill of many others (a list is
provided in Annex A). We are indebted to each of these individuals for the information they provided
and sincerely hope that this assessment may be of value to them and their organizations. Specific thanks
are extended to Mr. Chris Weaver, Managing Director for World Wildlife Fund in Namibia, and Mrs.
Monica Koep, a Development/Democracy Consultant, who provided much insight and gave generously
of their time to answer our many questions. At USAID, Environmental Officer Ms. Dalene van der
Westhuizen was instrumental to the success of our assignment by helping to arrange meetings, plotting
the logistical arrangements with us, and making constructive suggestions on key documents.
