NGC 4449, GALAXY IN CANES VENATICI<br />

R.A. 12h 28.2m, Dec. 44° 05' (2000.0)<br />

Technical. NGC 4449 is an irregular galaxy<br />

in the approximate shape of a rectangle. On<br />

the northern corner is a small hook that<br />

points east, composed mostly ofH II regions.<br />

VISUAL ASTRONOMY <strong>OF</strong> <strong>THE</strong> DEEP SKY<br />

Visual. This galaxy appears 4.2 by 3.0 arc.<br />

minutes in size and has a total magnitude of<br />

10.5. The mean surface brightness is 21.9<br />

magnitudes per square arc-second. Through<br />

the 8-inch, the galaxy appeared as an elon.<br />

gated glow with a faint extension on the north<br />

side that corresponds to the hook in the<br />

photograph. Under some conditions at low<br />

powers with medium size telescopes, the<br />

galaxy may appear more rectangular.<br />
