Using Switches The second option uses a “smart hub”, referred to as a switch, to forward only data destined for a computer on the WATCHOUT sub-net. This avoids collisions with data not related to WATCHOUT, thereby improving the performance of the entire network. It also allows you to chain a large number of switches together without the risk of data degradation due to multiple hub hops. When using only dumb hubs, this is not a problem. But when using smart switches, this may be an issue. In this case, you must make sure that the switches are configured so that they allow “UDP broadcasts” to pass through from the production computer to the display computers. It is not advisable to split the display computers that make up a single WATCHOUT system on more than one subnet when using smart switches. 26 Chapter 3: Installation
License Keys The license key connects to the USB port. Each computer in the system requires a WATCHOUT license key, including the production computer. Plug the key into any free USB (Universal Serial Bus) port on the computer. If a computer does not have a free USB port, install a USB hub to increase the number of USB ports. If the computer doesn’t have USB at all, install a USB interface card. USB-hubs are occasionally built into computer monitors or keyboards. ◆ NOTE: You can run the production software off-line without a license key connected.
