<strong>Ramayana</strong>: A Divine Drama – Vol. V<br />

Indrajit, the son of Ravana ... had defeated Indra himself. He was<br />

the eldest son of Ravana. (SSB 2002 p.124)<br />

He (Ravana) had a son by name Indrajit 59 , who conquered the<br />

mighty Indra, the king of gods (SSS Vol.31 p.385)<br />

Meghanada’s interlude <strong>with</strong> Hanuman:<br />

Hanuman 60 saw an orchard and plucking some tasty fruits, he ate<br />

his fill.... A Rakshasa guard wanted to frighten him ... He gave<br />

blow to Rakshasa guard which felled him to the ground who ran<br />

and reported to his gang head.... the news reached Ravana... It<br />

struck as an evil omen to Ravana... The formidable forces sent by<br />

him could not harm Hanuman-- Ravana sent his own dear son,<br />

Akshayakumara, at the head of thousands of seasoned Warrior-<br />

Rakshasas. But Hanuman slaughtered this host in a trice and<br />

Ravana had to mourn the death of his beloved son. The entire<br />

land shivered in fear at the news of the death of the Prince and<br />

the decimation of his army…… Ravana sent word for<br />

Meghanada, and commissioned him to destroy this new invader.<br />

He placed at his disposal a huge army of several thousands.<br />

Meghanada ascended his chariot and led the heroic army in great<br />

pomp. As they marched along, earth and sky were astounded at<br />

their might and their angry tread. Their war cry rent the heavens.<br />

All who witnessed that pageantry and panoply were struck <strong>with</strong><br />

wonder and admiration.<br />
