<strong>Ramayana</strong>: A Divine Drama – Vol. V<br />

The one who is swayed by the ego is sure to suffer in life. When<br />

people laughed loudly at his plight, Ravana felt deeply wounded,<br />

as though he had lost all his ten heads. (SSB 1996 p.28)<br />

Seeing the mighty Ravana fall down in such a manner, all the<br />

kings were surprised. They said to themselves, “If Ravana cannot<br />

lift it, nobody else can do it.” They were afraid even to come<br />

forward to try lifting the bow. (SSS Vol.35 p.118-119)<br />

Rama’s instinct was to go to Ravana to get him out of his<br />

predicament. Viswamitra seized the opportunity and told Rama<br />

to go and pick up the Bow. Rama’s aim was not lifting the Bow;<br />

but to help Ravana. Help ever hurt Never. This was Rama’s<br />

motto. Rama walked up to the place and lifted up the bow <strong>with</strong><br />

left hand and put it aside. All were astonished. The weight of the<br />

Bow was phenomenal and the power required for lifting it was of<br />

a cosmic proportion. It was far beyond human capacity. The<br />

divine power is truly cosmic in nature. This power was present in<br />

Rama (Dasara Discourses 2001 p.116)<br />

RAVANA AND HIS SISTER, SURPANAKHA<br />

The wicked and vicious sister of Ravana (was) Surpanakha<br />

(RKRV Part II p.28)<br />

It was (in Panchavati) that the demoness Surpanakha tried to<br />

make friendship <strong>with</strong> Rama and Lakshmana. She was attracted<br />

by their charming personality. She assumed the form of a<br />

beautiful lady and approached Rama <strong>with</strong> a request to marry her.<br />

Rama signalled to Lakshmana. He, being highly intelligent,<br />
