Sumantra<br />

Riding in his chariot towards Rama’s Palace he had noticed how<br />

the hundreds of thousands of loyal subjects who filled the streets<br />

talked among themselves that he was on his way to bring Rama<br />

into the Coronation Hall, for the ceremony. He saw their faces<br />

blooming in joyous expectation. They scarce winked their eyes,<br />

lest they miss some incident or facet of joy. At last, Sumantra<br />

stepped <strong>with</strong>out any question asked, into all sections of that<br />

seven storied mansion. As a fish dives noiselessly through the<br />

depths of a flooded river, Sumantra glided through the corridors<br />

and halls of that Palace! (RKRV Part I p.263-265)<br />

Sumantra tries to interpret the words of Rama:<br />

Within the Palace, the companions of Rama, elated and happy,<br />

ready <strong>with</strong> their bright countenances and splendid robes were<br />

waiting to accompany him to the Festival Hall. Sumantra went<br />

into the apartments that lay still deeper inside the Palace. There<br />

he saw Rama, seated on a golden cot, scattering Divine Light<br />

around him, and Sita standing by his side, gently fanning him.<br />

He shone like the Moon <strong>with</strong> the star, Chitra.<br />

Sumantra was in a hurry. He could not brook delay. He said,<br />

“Rama! Mother Kaikeyi and your Father have both asked me to<br />

bring you quickly to the Palace of that Queen. They have sent me<br />

on that mission here. I have hurried hither for that same<br />

purpose.” As soon as he heard those words, Rama turned towards<br />

Sita and said, “Sita! This is a sign of some obstacle 145 , and not of<br />

anything else. I am not unaware of this, but I kept silent and said,<br />
