then could you ever hope to kill him Even in a dream, you<br />

cannot realise that hope. This is a dirty magic trick which fails to<br />

deceive me.” Sita poured scorn and insults on Ravana.<br />

Meanwhile, loud exultant shouts of “Jai,” “Jai for Lord Rama,”<br />

“Jai for Lord Rama,” were heard from all around. The Vanaras<br />

had entered the City from all directions!<br />

Ravana hurried back into his palace and the Audience Hall. The<br />

good woman, Sarama, wife of Vibhishana, then came near Sita<br />

and consoled and comforted her. She said, “Mother! This Ravana<br />

is a trickster and all that he does is subterfuge. No one can dare<br />

hurt Rama; just now, he has triumphantly entered Lanka <strong>with</strong> his<br />

Vanara hordes. Lanka is being shattered into shreds by the very<br />

shouts of the Monkeys.” (RKRV Part II p.201)<br />

THE SIEGE<br />

With Rama in their hearts, the Vanaras armed <strong>with</strong> boulders and<br />

trees rolled forward in terror-striking floods. Lanka was reputed<br />

impregnable, but the blessings of Rama helped them to break<br />

into it. The Eastern Gate was stormed by the forces under Nala.<br />

The Southern Gate was breached by the millions under the<br />

command of Angada. The Western Gate fell before the onslaught<br />

of the army led by Hanuman. The Northern Gate was guarded by<br />

Ravana himself, and Rama fought <strong>with</strong> him there.<br />
