Field Barbara/Phyllis
Area Central North Sea
Operator Dana
Development concept Subsea
Transport concept 40km pipeline to Everest?
Start-up Q4 2012
Comments: A host has been selected and commercial terms agreed for the subsea tieback of
the Barbara and Phyllis gas/condensate fields, Dana reports. Production will be exported by a
40km, 12in pipeline – which suggests the host will be BG’s Everest platform to the north. Startup
has slipped a little further to late 2012. The next step will be a detailed FEED study, leading
to project sanction in Q4. While Phyllis is wholly owned by Shell and ExxonMobil, Barbara lies
on three different licences and a unitisation agreement has been reached. Combined reserves
are 230 bcf.
Field Bentley
Area Northern North Sea
Operator Xcite
Development concept Production facility + storage
Transport concept Offshore loading
Start-up EPS 2011/12
Comments: Xcite is planning a phased development of the Bentley heavy-oil field in block
9/3b. The next step is an appraisal well, 9/3b-R, to be drilled and tested this year – if
successful, first oil could possibly come as early as 2011, the company says. By April it
expects to sign a contract with ADTI for a jackup rig to drill the well. Challenger Minerals will
farm into the field, taking a 4% stake and contributing $4m to the well costs. The financial
burden will be eased to a degree by tax advantages offered in the 2009 budget. In Dec Fugro
drilled a geotechnical test well which showed that a jackup can be used to drill the appraisal
well, which at 110m water depth is at the limit for jackups. The same bore will be used for the
appraisal well, which will also be drilled by Fugro. The contractor was the first member of the
Bentley alliance, which Xcite envisages as a group of suppliers willing to take some risk in the
development in return for appropriate reward. ADTI, which, like Challenger, is owned by
Transocean, is also a member. Amec will help to plan the production test and provide
development services. BP will provide services for the offtake and sale of the crude, and assist
with securing $20m of financing for the development. Full field development will call for 50 plus
wells and a fixed platform, but for the EPS an FPSO is one of the options. In all phases oil will
be exported by shuttle tanker, so storage in some form will be required. Base-case reserves
are estimated by RPS at 122m bbl.
