At a m<strong>in</strong>imum, your committee should contact the plann<strong>in</strong>g or eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g offices<br />

<strong>in</strong> the cities, villages, <strong>to</strong>wns, and county governments <strong>in</strong> your watershed. F<strong>in</strong>d out<br />

who is the most appropriate local official for flood-related matters and talk <strong>to</strong> that<br />

person. F<strong>in</strong>d out how <strong>in</strong>terested they are <strong>in</strong> flood<strong>in</strong>g issues and what they are<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Most of your recommended activities will be carried out at the community<br />

level, so the staff who will be responsible for implement<strong>in</strong>g the plan should be<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g it. Which personnel <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>volve depends on the community’s<br />

organization and the measures that will likely<br />

be reviewed and/or selected dur<strong>in</strong>g the plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

process.<br />

Other flood-related agencies and<br />

organizations <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

The local build<strong>in</strong>g department that<br />

issues permits for floodpla<strong>in</strong> and<br />

watershed construction<br />

The soil and water conservation district<br />

The U.S. Department of Agriculture<br />

agencies that work with watershed<br />

property owners (e.g., the Natural<br />

Resources Conservation and the<br />

Cooperative Extension services)<br />

Regional or metropolitan water, sewer,<br />

or sanitary districts<br />

The city or county emergency<br />

management or civil defense agency<br />

The state natural resources or water<br />

resources agency<br />

Local watershed councils or associations<br />

The district office of the U.S. Army<br />

Corps of Eng<strong>in</strong>eers.<br />

is the M.O.M. Resource Direc<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

the National Park Service. It is a<br />

computer program that lists over 300<br />

government and private programs. It is<br />

easy <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>stall and use. The software is<br />

designed <strong>to</strong> run <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>dows and is<br />
