Unwavering Resolve
Shen Yun dancer Meijing Tu looks every inch the feminine young woman. Yet
beneath the gentle persona that reflects traditional virtues of ancient Chinese
women, Tu carries a strong-willed spirit to achieve.

—— 訪 美 國 「 神 韻 藝 術 團 」 舞 蹈 演 員 杜 美 淨
電 話 撥 通 之 後 , 杜 美 淨 熱 情 溫 暖 的 聲 音 在 那 頭 響 起 。
她 說 , 自 己 和 姊 姊 剛 剛 去 朋 友 家 做 客 , 此 時 正 在 回 家
的 路 上 。 我 們 的 談 話 就 這 樣 藉 著 一 場 歡 聚 的 餘 溫 , 愉
快 地 展 開 了 。

管 是 電 話 採 訪 , 但 美 淨 很 快 就 拉 近 了 我 和 她
儘 的 距 離 。 當 我 問 她 習 慣 講 英 文 , 還 是 中 文
她 笑 著 回 答 說 :「 講 Chinglish 可 以 嗎 就 是 中 文
攙 和 著 英 文 。」 我 們 不 禁 同 時 笑 了 起 來 , 話 題 首 先
進 入 了 美 淨 東 西 合 璧 的 成 長 歷 程 。
在 西 方 的 中 國 傳 統 女 孩
美 淨 的 父 母 是 香 港 人 , 上 大 學 時 來 到 美 國 ,
並 定 居 在 了 新 澤 西 州 。 所 以 , 美 淨 生 長 在 美 國 , 是
個 西 方 文 化 背 景 的 孩 子 。 她 唯 一 與 中 國 文 化 親 密 接
觸 的 機 會 就 是 曾 回 過 一 兩 次 香 港 , 去 探 訪 那 邊 的 親
戚 。 然 而 , 美 淨 卻 說 自 己 是 個 非 常 傳 統 的 中 國 女
孩 。「 我 的 媽 媽 非 常 嚴 格 。 姊 姊 和 我 的 禮 貌 、 禮 儀
啊 ! 媽 媽 都 是 按 照 中 國 傳 統 去 要 求 的 。」 得 益 於 自
己 的 「 虎 媽 」, 美 淨 生 長 在 西 方 , 卻 依 然 保 持 了 東
方 女 孩 的 文 靜 柔 美 , 但 同 時 她 也 面 臨 了 一 些 文 化 差
異 造 成 的 困 境 。
可 能 因 為 家 教 嚴 格 , 美 淨 的 言 行 有 些 拘 謹 , 不
像 大 多 數 同 齡 的 西 方 孩 子 那 樣 熱 情 大 方 。 她 在 學 校
是 一 個 內 向 害 羞 的 女 孩 , 從 來 不 會 表 現 得 太 活 躍 ,
也 不 會 主 動 去 表 達 自 己 的 觀 點 和 看 法 。 這 種 東 方 人
欣 賞 的 乖 巧 文 靜 , 在 西 方 的 學 校 裏 卻 有 些 格 格 不
入 。 在 成 長 的 過 程 中 , 美 淨 一 直 覺 得 自 己 不 是 很 合
群 , 不 像 那 些 活 潑 開 朗 的 同 學 那 麼 受 人 歡 迎 。「 那
時 , 如 果 有 同 學 請 我 到 他 家 裏 去 玩 兒 , 我 都 會 想 ,
他 只 是 隨 便 說 說 吧 ! 不 會 是 真 心 想 讓 我 去 。」 這 為
美 淨 的 童 年 生 活 蒙 上 了 一 層 淡 淡 的 陰 影 。
不 過 , 好 在 美 淨 還 有 一 個 「 好 夥 伴 」—— 那 就
是 藝 術 。「 我 媽 媽 很 喜 歡 藝 術 , 她 曾 經 學 過 舞 蹈 、
音 樂 , 可 惜 後 來 放 棄 了 。 在 我 和 姊 姊 長 大 些 後 ,

and play hide-and-seek with the autumn
foliage. Flaming red and golden leaves danced
in the breeze before falling on the shimmering
lake. Meijing Tu walked confidently down the
steps toward the water. In a crisp white dress, her
slim silhouette stood out from the burst of green,
gold, and crimson.
From afar, one could clearly see Tu knew where
she was going — to the wooden bench by the
grassy bank where we met to talk. She walked with
the same enduring determination that turned her
into a professional artiste with the world-class
Shen Yun Performing Arts group.
Tu’s voice was warm and engaging. When asked
which language she’d like to converse in, the New
Jersey native paused for a couple of seconds. Then
with a twinkle in her eye and a luminous smile,
she replied, “Can we speak Chin-glish I mean
Chinese with a sprinkling of English.”
Retaining traditional values
Tu, a fluent Mandarin speaker, said her parents
come from Hong Kong and speak Cantonese at
home. But she and her older sister, a musician
in the Shen Yun Orchestra, grew up steeped in
Western culture. She began speaking Mandarin
predominantly after joining Fei Tian Academy
of the Arts — the school that trains most of the
Shen Yun Performing Arts dancers.
