二 戰 而 飽 受 種 族 歧 視 。 儘 管 他 們 都 是 在 BC 省 出
生 長 大 的 原 住 民 , 卻 在 日 本 偷 襲 珍 珠 港 之 後 ,
失 去 了 房 產 和 生 計 , 並 在 戰 俘 營 中 一 直 生 活 到
戰 後 。 即 便 是 二 戰 後 出 生 的 Susan, 也 曾 有 過 類
似 的 遭 遇 。「 一 天 , 我 在 房 前 的 草 坪 上 玩 耍 ,

Susan 坦 言 這 件 事 在 她 心 中 留 下 了 難 以 消 除 的 陰
影 , 但 也 讓 她 變 得 更 有 勇 氣 和 動 力 去 爭 取 有 尊
嚴 的 生 活 。
血 脈 中 的 武 士 道 精 神
Susan 告 訴 我 們 , 做 為 第 三 代 的 日 本 裔 移
民 , 她 和 兄 弟 姐 妹 們 一 直 對 自 己 的 祖 先 感 到 好
奇 。 後 來 , 她 的 一 位 表 兄 做 了 一 番 調 查 , 發 現
他 們 竟 是 日 本 武 士 的 後 裔 。 這 個 發 現 讓 Susan
著 實 感 到 興 奮 和 自 豪 。
古 代 的 日 本 武 士 有 著 嚴 格 的 道 德 操 守 , 對
國 家 非 常 忠 誠 。 這 種 忠 義 的 精 神 , 是 Susan 最 為
神 往 和 時 刻 銘 記 在 心 的 。 她 說 自 己 也 很 想 像 日

與 Susan 有 同 樣 想 法 的 , 還 有 她 的 父 母 。
加 國 的 日 本 裔 移 民 , 自 上 世 紀 50 年 代 開 始 重 建
third-generation Japanese-Canadian, had her first experience
with racism — a memory she can’t erase, yet an
event that has spurred her to live a life of honour.
“I was playing on the front lawn when a business man
approached me. He returned my smile with a racist slur,
a word my mother told me never to repeat,” says Langdon.
Her parents and grandparents had lived through
the worst of racism. Despite being born and raised in
British Columbia, they were removed from their homes
and businesses in the 1940s after Japan attacked Pearl
Harbour. They were forced to live in prisoner-of-war
camps until after the war.
As Japanese Canadians struggled to rebuild their lives
in the 1950s, they taught the third generation, the Sansei
generation born between the 1940s and 1960s — Langdon’s
generation — to grow up without a strong sense of
membership in a larger Japanese Canadian community.
Youth were encouraged integrate and not marry Asian.
“They told us to never expect a handout, never commit a
crime, and to work hard for everything,” says Langdon. “It
was ingrained in us that if you want something you have
to earn it yourself.”
And that’s exactly what Langdon did. Nose to the
